Amazon has released a Kindle app for Windows 8, and many major PC manufacturers are preinstalling it on their new Windows devices.

The e-reader app, which will run on both Windows 8 and Windows RT, was revealed on Thursday as Microsoft officially launched the x86 and ARM-based versions of its next-generation operating system.

Manufacturers preinstalling the Kindle app on their PCs and tablets include Samsung, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus.

"We're excited to make the best content selection, along with all of the benefits of the Kindle ecosystem, available on Windows 8," Kindle chief Dorothy Nicholls said in a statement. "We're thrilled that leading manufacturers have selected the Kindle ecosystem for preload on their new Windows 8 devices."

Amazon offers Kindle apps for a wide range of devices, from iOS to Android. Users can synchronise their reading across all these devices, so they can pick up on one where they left off on another.

The company already has an app for earlier versions of Windows, from XP to 7. However, Windows 8 is the first version of Microsoft's OS that comes with its own app store.
