Android phone user stepping up to tablets

Hey guys and gals,
I'm a longtime android user with my smart phones, and new to tablets in general.
I need to buy myself a tablet, and I need a eReader or tablet capable of being an ereader for Christmas gift for Mom.

Any ideas or suggestions? I'd be happy to hear anything and everything. Feel free to direct me to past discussions. I'd be curious to know what you guys would do to solve the Ereader for mom dilemma.
