Updating the firmware for the A81 series is one of the easiest I have played with. It is a five step operation.
1. Download the firmware from a reputable source. Vincenzo in a thread offers a source
2. Download a USBformat tool made by HP. <LINK>
3. Format a MicroSD card with the HP tool to FAT. (I use a 2Gb Kingston, but could get by with just a 512M if you could find one)
4. Extract the files from the RAR file and copy them in the order to the MicroSD card as described on other posts. (THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP)
5. Insert the card to the MicroSD slot, Push the - (Lower Volume) and the Power button until the Unit starts the FW update. This is about a 4-5 sec. Release the volume button, then the power button.
The Update takes about 4-6 minutes. Please Note, You need to back up or have copies of all applications and data on your A81. It will wipe those, Your prior settings will be lost. Think of getting a PC back after a new HD and OS is applied.
