Connecting an SD Card for Photo Viewing

I am an amatuer photographer and would like to be able to view my photos on my tablet (Lenovo IdeaPad K1) easily. My initial thought was to get an USB SDHC (full size not micro) card reader and connect it via the USB cable. But apperently that is only for connecting it to a computer and will not recognize the card reader. Is there a way to either activate the USB port to recognize a storage device or another way to read a full size SDHC card?

I have an ACER A500 with a full size USB port and it supports a USB card reader/writer.
Power down the tablet. Insert the card reader. Power on the tablet.
On my A500, any file explorer can find the card reader and inserted CF card as a USB external drive.
