Desktop Icons and Background Applications

1) How do I remove desktop icons? I have found a way to add select icons, but not how to remove them.

2) Is there an easy way to close applications? After I'm done with an application, is there a simple way to exit? Is there a simple way to close all applications? The only thing I've been able to do is go to settings --> applications, then force close individual applications. But the toolbar application button on the OS still indicates the application is open.

1. Touch an icon and keep it touched, then drag it to the top right hand corner to the carbage can/remove text.
2. Not really as it is not neccesary, you can look in the market for task killers.
