External Hardrive removal

Hi
Can anyone tell me how to remove external usb hardrive safely from my Acer Iconia A500
I cannot find any information on how to do this safely as I do not want to lose the information by doing this incorrectly.

Go to Settings>Storage.Unmount USB. Then remove the USB cable.
