Generic tablet

I have a generic, no-name tablet that was given to me a couple of years ago. It is very limited but I used to be able to connect to the app market etc and do simple searches. Now when I try to connect to my home wi-fi network it will show but when I hit connect, it immediately disconnects. It will not give me a connection ANYWHERE! I was going to give it to my 10 yo son but right now it is pretty much useless!! Any ideas?..
