For some people, one of the joys of owning a tablet device is tinkering around with it. It can be satisfying to add custom ROMs, themes and mods to your device. Of course, one of the first things that you need to do to make that possible is unlock the bootloader, which can be a difficult process for the novice. Luckily the Android community across the web is vast, and because of that, there is a plethora of info to be found related to this subject for a huge variety of devices.

Wow, that was quick. One nice thing about Nexus devices is there is less need for this. Still it is nice for those that want it.
 
Why the heck are they locking the bootloader in the first place.? Here's a thought stop locking the bootloader to begin with.

I think it has to do with DRM. Essentially services like Hulu and Netflix are requiring it in order to make their services available. It is pretty silly considering boot loaders don't directly have anything to do with piracy :(

Asus "noted the lock was in place to enable Google video rentals, and that users will have voided their warranty and be unable to rent videos if they use the bootloader unlocker."

Ok thanks this is a US rule, explains why none of my androids had locked bootloaders, cause they aren't made in US.
