help before santa comes

Please can anyone help me. I have bought 2 google androids for my grandchildren. \i have been able to download games from the market place but neither books or films.so \i have down loaded them on my computer and put them on a usb stick to transfer. As well as some photos \i have spent hours following instructions and cant do it. This is what I have done.
Put in stick gone to file browser and opened usb . clicked on desired item until table comes up. clicked copy. clicked the little house sign on the top left . (is this the local disk ) clicked on file photos videos. \then \i should paste my file to it but the table doesn't come up again allowing me to paste. \i have struggled for hours . Can anyone help. Is the little house the internal memory. It doesnt have all the icons in it. \what is a apk file.
