I just bought a Nextbook Ares 8A with Android Marshmallow, I want to transfer some pictures over to my laptop, I can't figure out how, i've looked for answers, read the instructions and still nothing. Please help.

Try a different cable. Try a different USB port. Try a different computer.

Transferring files is as described in post 2. That is pretty much universal for all recent devices.

Text messages and contacts can be backed up using ADB, but unless rooted and unless you know where the files go, you won't be able to effectively restore them. Videos and images, because they are stored in the user space, i.e. /sdcard, can be copied as described without ADB and without root.

It seems that Marshmallow users have to do some extra settings in order to connect to PC as MTP.
Try this:
Go to Settings> About phone (> Software info), tap “Build number” 7-10 times. Back to Settings> Developer options, check “Select USB Configuration”, choose MTP.

Good suggestion, if might be the problem of USB debugging.
