Iconia A501 rooting issue.

Hi everyone noon & 1st time posting (if it's in wrong place I apologise)

I've been given an acer iconia a501 tablet. And it's on 3.2 I've tried and tried to update & root it and can't for the life of me do it (getting a poor coverage message even with full wifi signal?) Can anyone help or give me a "Total dummies guide to rooting" before it goes out the window! Lol.
