How can I convert my videos from my computer to play on the Acer A500?

What format are your videos on the computer? The Acer A500 can play different formats and you can always get a player from the marketplace to play different formats that the Acer player doesn't. Also there are converters that can be purchased for video conversions. Before you purchase anything post what format the videos are in.

new to tablet. do i need to download the free video to android app on pc then convert movies to mp4 format, they in wmv format now, then transfer them to tablet. I tried to download straight to tablet and no luck in opening it.

Also, how do i delete items like videos from the tablet and which file explorer would you recommend?

Yes it has to be downloaded/installed to your computer then copy the result to your tablet.

I use Freemaker Video Converter and convert to Android.
I use MXZ Video player.
I have tried many video players and I found MX to be the best, especially since the update
a few days ago that lets you simply stretch the video to fit the screen, which most do not let you do.
The video quality is also very good.
