No indication of battery charging

I just received a Samsung Galaxy Tab-10.1. Model GT-P7510. Android version 3.1
I plugged in the charging cable and in a few seconds a battery picture appears in the window and shows indication that the battery is charging. However after about 30 seconds this picture closes and i can see no other indications that the battery is being charged. Is this normal?

As long as you do not have the tablet on, the screen will black out after about 30 seconds.

If you turn screen on, lower right corner should have a battery charging icon.

Thanks Sherri64, I found that, quite by accident, that pressing the Power switch displays the battery charging icon in the center of the window.
