Only getting access to the Chinese android app market

I just obtained what I believe to be a Haipad Mid---The problem that I'm having thus far is that I'm only getting access the Android Chinese Market which is extremely limited, & to be honest...terrible. Do I need to update the OS on this pad? Is there an update needed to access the U.S. Android market? Where do I go from here?
