S7 won't connect to airline wifi

I used open wifi connections at several locations on a recent trip to San Francisco. When I got to the airport it would not connect even though it saw the open connection and said it connected. Same thing happened onboard the plane. Anyone know why the S7 won't connect to airline wifi? Thank you!

Did it connect and not work, or not connect at all?

Where they truly open connections, or did they require hotspot logins?

Just taken mine around asia, and I had more trouble connecting my blackberry to various wifi, than the huawei. But many of the wifi sites have weak signal, or have congestion which stops you from connecting as well.
