Tab optimized apps not compatible with Lenovo A1? WHY?

I am new to the world of Android, well tablets anyway. I just received my Lenovo A1 7" tablet, and I'm disappointed to see that many of the apps I want (those optimized for tablets) are not compatible with the A1. It this a product of the OS (2.3.4), the screen size, a limitation by Lenovo, or what? Is there a way around it?

Any help is appreciated.

The problem here is with the OS. Beacause 2.3 Gingerbread is a phone OS, it will not provide the framework for tablet apps on our device
