usb connection problems

Bought chinese cheap device ( yeah, yeah, serves me right ) but cannot get it to see usb connected drives. Device reads "preparing Udisk... checking for errors" and sticks there. Cannot see files on drive. Does anyone please have a solution for this. Inserted sd card which works fine.
Generic model number running 1.6, build number WMT2.1.2_105

I had a similar problem; found that if I connected the USB cable to the computer BEFORE switching on the tablet, then pulling down the notification panel after connecting, and selecting to mount the tablet's drives.
