Visa Waiver revoked (and S7 recovery not working)

I've had a bad week!
There I was at checkin at Heathow only to find my Visa Waiver had been revoked and couldn't travel. Gutted!
So I have a lot of time on my hands waiting for our Fiance visa application to be processed (and hopefully approved!) before I can travel to the States to be married.
I decided to give all the latest S7 developments a try as I hadn't been all that active over the past few weeks. I have been occupied with my latest phone (an orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade variant) and a little beauty it is too.
So, imagine my surprise when I can't get the S7 into recovery mode.
The menu+send+power combination each time gives the green android unpacking screen and then moves on to reinstall the firmware afresh.
I can reflash the firmware from the upgrade software with USB link, but that's about it, so any ideas from anyone as to the cause?
Can the CW recovery flash be done from SD card?

Have you tryed to boot cwrecovery with fastboot and restore your backup?
I believe that some how you have original recovery not the mod one.

fastboot usage.

windows.

fastboot.exe flash <partition> c:/path/to/recovery.img
fastboot.exe flash <partition> c:/path/to/system.img *1
fastboot.exe flash <partition> c:/path/to/boot.img *1

(other things)
fastboot.exe erase <partition>
(other options exist but are rarely used).

<<<<PARTITIONS AVAILABLE>>>>
boot
system
recovery
userdata
cache
misc*2

Linux Usage.*3

SAME AS WINDOWS
just without the .exe
./fastboot flash <partition> <image>
./fastboot erase <partition>

NOTES
*1 The system.img / boot.img should be grabbed from a clockwork recovery mod backup.
*2 misc only exists on some S7's as far as i know, i.e. the S7-104 does not have one.
*3 remember to "chmod +x ./fastboot"

I've used flash boot on the blade without problem but what's the key combination to enter bootlaoder mode?
