Walmart is training for Black Friday, that will go down at the end of this month. They started with promotions early, by offering the 10.1 inch Android slate Xelio for a mere $49. The product is pictured below. The device packs a 10.1 inch display, 4 GB of storage and Android 4.1, plus 512 MB of RAM. The screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and other specs include a 1 GHz processor, WiFi, a front webcam, a microUSB 2.0 port and a battery with functioning time of 5 hours. The device weighs 1.32 lbs and measures 0.45 inches in thickness. It runs Android 4.1 and while this is not a high end device, it may be enough for children and people who just want to buy their first tablet. The holiday season is almost upon us, so it’s time for big price reductions and devices that go way below $100.

My next tablet won't be coming for some time. Upgrading my phone comes first.

With most Black Friday deals still under wraps, this appears to be an early indicator of more cut-rate tablet specials to come. They're invariably using Android for obvious reasons, though they're more likely to use an older version of the OS that is powered by basic specs (no Retina-quality displays, no latest quad-core processors). Given their status as the anti-iPad in terms of price and cachet, what is the impact of these bargain-basement tablets? Such budget tablets are the reason that Android will surpass iOS as the top tablet platform and that once-hot eReaders are on the ropes.
