What exactly are the functions of the micro USB port besides charging ?

If it is indeed being used for the charger then it probably doesn't have a host mode by default. So it wouldn't really be able to do much, UNLESS you can find a cable called an OTG cable that was made for your tablet and had a micro USB connection. Sorry I can't be more help.

There are some free apps here that supposedly can test your tablet to see whether or not it supports connecting devices via an OTG cable.
