If your 3.1 OTA update fails
theres a paper trail as to why it failed.
On a rooted A500, using RootExplorer open (as text file) /cache/recovery/last_log. You will see some error(s) near the end of the log file. In my case it mentioned file missing /system/app/DTG.apk. That was the Documents To Go app I removed when I first bought my A500. So I needed to put that app back in that folder in order for the update to complete.
So I downloaded the previous system update file Acer_A500_0.000.00_1.016.01_COM_GEN1 at: [OTA] Full Package and Update - xda-developers
Then decrypted it with the decryption tool (just run the .exe file and load the file you just downloaded from the previous step and hit "decrypt") from: [DEV][APP] Acer update decrypter - xda-developers
Then with Windows Explorer opened the unencrypted zip file, opened the update.zip file (takes a few seconds to unzip), browsed to /system/app/ and copied then pasted the DTG.apk file to a folder on my hard drive.
Using WiFi File Explorer on the A500 I then copied the DTG.apk file from my computer back to the /system/app/ folder of the A500.
Once that was done I tried the 3.1 OTA update and this time it worked perfectly.
So look at that log file in /cache/recovery/ it will tell you what you need to complete the 3.1 update successfully.
PS- once 3.1 updated, you need to re-root with the new 1.2 root tool for the A500 as Gingerbreak no longer works : [HOWTO] Root for stock HC3.1 - xda-developers
