B&N Free Friday Books

You never know, that might come in handy. It wasn't one listed here but I downloaded "The Glades" as a free book. turns out it was a script for a TV show (one that actually aired). Interesting to read in that format as it turned out but in the first couple of pages I certainly was thinking about a return :D

5/11/12 Today's book is Pillow Talk by Freya North.

This charming story of love lost and regained follows the unlikely path of two weary people who thought that their chance at love had passed them by. As teenagers, Arlo and Petra knew they had chemistry, but eventually went their separate ways. Fast-forward 17 years, and Arlo’s a reformed rocker who’s chosen the quiet life, and Petra’s a talented jeweler with a loser boyfriend. Each is struggling to put a troubled past behind them. By chance they meet again and are confronted with a choice: fall back on all their old excuses, or throw caution to the wind and give true love one more chance.

5/18/12 Today's book is Occultation and Other Stories by Laird Barron.

Pitting ordinary men and women against a carnivorous, chaotic cosmos, Occultation's eight tales of terror (two never before published) include the Theodore Sturgeon and Shirley Jackson Award-nominated story "The Forest" and Shirley Jackson Award nominee "The Lagerstatte." Featuring an introduction by Michael Shea, Occultation brings more of the spine-chillingly sublime cosmic horror Laird Barron's fans have come to expect.

5/25/12 Today's book is 212 by Alafair Burke.

A young NYU student suspects that her life is in danger—a series of hateful anonymous web postings suggest that someone is watching her every move. Her friends assure her it’s only a prank, but they soon find out how wrong they were, when she turns up murdered.

When NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher and her no-nonsense partner J. J. Rogan begin digging into the murder, they find some strange connections to a seemingly unrelated case. As they peel back the layers, it becomes clear that the web is the ideal place for strange bedfellows to connect, and an even better place for a motivated murderer to find their next victim.

6/1/12 Today's book is Though a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen.

Karleen Koen's sweeping saga contains unforgettable characters consumed with passion: the extraordinarily beautiful fifteen-year-old noblewoman, Barbara Alderley; the man she adores, the wickedly handsome Roger MontGeoffry; her grandmother, the duchess, who rules the family with cunning and wit; and her mother, the ineffably cruel, self-centered and licentious Diana. Like no other work, Through a Glass Darkly is infused with intrigue, sweetened by romance and awash in the black ink of betrayal.

6/8/12 Today's book is A Time to Love by Barbara Cameron.

The Amish lifestyle—with its rejection of modern convenience and an emphasis on community and family—has long captured our imagination. More recently, Amish romance has emerged as one of the hottest trends in fiction. Cameron’s touching story—about an injured war correspondent who returns to her Amish grandmother’s home to recuperate—is a wonderful introduction to this popular genre.

6/15/12 Today's book is Gutshot Straight by Lou Berney.

With its irresistible cast of characters—a two-bit criminal in over his head, crime bosses with hair-trigger tempers, a wholesome damsel in distress— Lou Berney’s crime caper is reminiscent of Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. The action begins as Charles "Shake" Bouchon leaves prison, without much of a plan for life on the outside. Soon he’s made the classic mistake of taking ‘one last job,’ delivering a prized package for a notorious crime boss.

Imagine Shakes’ surprise when that package is a living, breathing, irresistibly charming housewife whose husband is in trouble with a notorious Vegas kingpin. Now he’s having second thoughts about making good on his offer, since it’s pretty clear that she’ll meet an unsavory fate if she’s delivered as promised.

As a special Father’s Day bonus, PGA fans and weekend duffers will want to download Arnold Palmer’s poignant essay Reflections on the Game now. This free essay is included in the fascinating and intimate biography Arnold Palmer: A Personal History by Thomas Hauser.

Sounds good. I might get around to reading this one in a few years (or decades at my current pace).

It does look like a good one, I'll probably get to it around the same time you do.

6/22/12 Today's book is Birdman by Mo Hayder.

Hayder brings panache to the serial killer detective thriller—pitting a haunted, unflappable London detective, Jack Caffery, against a sui generis serial killer known as the Birdman. When five women’s ritualistically-murdered bodies are discovered within steps of each other, Caffery immediately knows that this will be the case of a lifetime. But most disturbing is the fact that no one seems to be looking for the victims—they don’t fit any missing persons reports.

How is the Birdman choosing these nameless victims? And what must Caffery do to put an end to his unprecedented reign of terror?

6/29/12 Today's book is Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson.

Three girls from very different backgrounds all converge during summer break on a Georgia peach orchard. Birdie’s dad owns the farm, her cousin Leeda is visiting for the summer, and Murphy is working on the farm as part of a public service punishment for some teenage mistakes. As the lazy southern summer passes, these three Georgia ‘peaches’ form an unlikely friendship, find themselves wading into the waters of teenage summer love, and learn life lessons along the way. Following their adventures will make you pine for those simple summers of days gone by.

7/6/12 Today's book is Meet the Annas by Robert Dunn.

Once a high-flying girl group, The Annas were at the top of the rock ‘n’ roll charts. But when the British Invasion knocked them off their perch, lead singer Anna Dubower fell hard. After mounting an unsuccessful comeback attempt, Anna winds up mysteriously dead, putting an end to the era of The Annas.

But songwriter Dink Stephenson still carries a torch for Anna 30 years later, and decides to dig into her murder and finally get to the bottom of her untimely demise. With a quirky cast of characters and a fast-moving plot, Meet the Annas is the book world’s answer to a catchy bubblegum tune.
