As far as pens go, I've used the rubber tipped stylus that works on the iPad on my A500 without any trouble. As far as I can tell it is not an "active pen".
However, the Galaxy Note 10.1 has an active S Pen that works great - especially designed for note taking. Even converts handwriting to text - great OCR ability.
