Email/contacts "Groups"

What is with "contacts" "groups"? I can get the email app to search and find names but when I use a group in the address it fails. What are groups good for if not distribution lists?

Since there are no replies I thought I would post an update. I now have ICS and groups are worse. You still can't use them as distribution lists and as you try to add new members to them it creates a new group with the exact same name.

I just got my first Android device, an Asus Transformer Prime, last week. Also running ICS. I've been searching all day to find a way to send mail to groups. I can't believe this is not easily acomplished with he default Email app.
