Pandigital 7' White Novel eReader Won't Allow Firmware Update?

I've read the posts on this forum re: pandigital 7" multimedia ereader and have followed the directions, but no dice.
Pandigital bellied-up last year so no updates are available, even though new boxed devices are being sold at Walmart and other sites. Where can an update be found? What are our alternatives?

I think you can do it through an alternate firmware, you can only install alternate firmware... Put the .dat file in the folder titled PD_Novel, which should be the default location where you go when you go to your pandigital novel through usb on your pc.

I'm new at this and not sure what you mean. Can you provide more specific instructions and will it work? It seems Pandigital went out of business so customer service is no help.
