Requesting Firmware Dumps from Coby Generation 3 Devices

Traveller1701, or Steev, ar anyone else with the know-how,

Could you please give us an overview of what needs to be done to the ROM image to root one of these Coby tablets?
Would it be similar to exacting a .config file from a compiled linux kernel, reconfiguring some of the compile options, and then recompiling it?
It would be great to learn about what is being changed in the ROM for rooting, enabling Play Store, etc.
Any recommended references where someone could learn more of the details and intracacies of this?

On a related note that I hope is appropriate for this thread...

Another common problem with the MID9042 is the browser telling you that web pages are not available.
On my tablet the wifi signal is shown as "excellent" with a valid ip address, but it just cannot load any pages (even GetJar).
Would you suspect a poor driver for the wireless? and could that be updated or replaced in a new ROM image?
A wifi hardware problem seems unlikely to me because it does manage to get an ip address assigned. Does it use the same wifi hardware as the 7042, 1042, ...?
Or could it be something in the configuration of the browser which might be modified in the new ROM? Or just replace the entire browser with something more stable?

I have a rooting tool in the Development Index for Windows users. If you download the tool and look at the batch file within it, you should be able to use the commands provided with a Linux version of ADB to get your 9042 rooted.

In short, there's four commands you need to issue in a terminal to get your tablet rooted as there is no Linux "batch file" included like there is for Windows. The tool should include everything needed to root the tablet, except the Linux ADB executable.

...

Solved the problem simply by changing from Auto to channel 1 on the router. This solves the problem at home, but it won't help when using public access.

The coby_root3.zip is the only fail safe I have atm works every time on my Coby Mid1042 thanks

Does anyone have a more recent dump of the 8042-4 stock ROM (Maybe Aug 2012 onward?) I used the posted stock ROM dumps from this forum to restore my 8042 (I bricked while attempting to update with ROM CM 9) that lost touchscreen functionality. Prior to ROM update, I made a dump of the stock boot, bootloader, & recovery imgs but the system.tgz did not get created ( I used CW recovery v 6.0.1.1).
Thanks!

Here is the mid9042 dump:

Thank you for your dump, it has already been used to restore a users tablet.

Guys, sorry to intrude but I though I'd post a pointer to a technical question I've asked in another of the threads of this group, about the way ICS A10 tablets boot in recovery mode (not "how do I do it" but "how does it works internally").
Here it is: http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...042-8042-9742-dump-post253035.html#post253035
No reply in several days there, thought that I might catch the attention of knowledgeable people here...
Sorry again for the interruption and now back to your regularly scheduled program :)
