The One 'Do I Buy This', 'What Do I Buy', 'I'm Looking For' Thread

Greetings all,

I am so pleased to have found this forum. I am in the market for a tablet and think an android device would be right for me. Was thinking of a Windows device perhaps, but not an Apple as the iPad seems too large and I am not fond of the proprietary lock. (Thus - if you think I ought to look at non-Android tablets, I am open to that.) In any case, I would appreciate any and all assistance in guidance.

1) what you will be using the tablet for. list any features you need, such as g-sensor, gps, bluetooth, Adobe Flash, or any specific apps

The tablet will be used for internet, e-mail, movies (do any tablets support Netflix?), tv (my PC is my one source of TV watching), music, e-books, radio. Flash, a radio antenna and a tv antenna would be ideal.

2) how much you are willing to spend

Thinking in the range of up to $700.

3) if you have an idea, what the size of the tablet should be

For portability, 7" would be great. If anyone can attest to a 10" device being easy to carry and hold (book reading, i.e. light weight for long term holding), I'd be open to that.

4) how much you know about Android, or just whether or not you are computer literate
I am literate with PCs, know next to nothing of Apple OS, and know nothing of the technical workings of android.

5) Please list your location somewhere.

I am in the US. Though I do want something today, I can wait, I guess, if there is a release soon for a great fit.

Thank you for any and all guidance.

@skoster With that type of budget, you could get the 7" Galaxy Tab or Dell Streak 7, but some units of the Streak 7 had issues with GPS fixing, I read. Finding a supported and reliable unit with GPS but no 3G data connectivity is difficult. By difficult, it means that it does not work out-of-the-box. You will need to instal a specific firmware and application on the Nook Color to get that sort of functionality, which is a project not everyone has the time for.

@leebarr26 The Advent Vega is the better device to get BY FAR. You do not want to consider the Dropad at all unless you absolutely need that form factor.

@etotheudu Netflix doesn't work on Android yet. But with that type of budget, getting a Motorola Xoom is the best device there is on the market. Otherwise, you would want a Samsung Galaxy Tab. You are not going to find radio or TV antennae on any popular tablets right now. If you consider yourself very literate at computers and want to save a bit of money, you would want to get the Nook Color 7" or the Viewsonic gTablet 10" as learning devices instead.

You should not miss this one coming besides Super Moderator's recommendations to you. I have an IPAD2 and two Android Tablets. This one is right up there as good or better than IPAD2. I am willing to trade my IPAD2 for this one. It is pricy but you got the best out of the best.

HTC Flyer. it gets everything in it. Wi-Fi version about $700. 3G version about $900.

From HTC through Youtube.

The Flyer is nice, and probably one of the only 7" tablets I can think of with a manufacturer's promise for an upgrade to Android 3.0 Honeycomb. But it's not really here yet. Sorry for not mentioning that one. It is probably going to be the best tablet you can get at 7" for a while.

Thank you to both replies. I will look into the HTC Flyer, the Nook and the gTablet 10. The thought of spending less money (I've been saving for a year!) and learning to tinker with a device is enticing. Though I think I prefer a 7", do you find a 10" tablet to be too heavy for holding as you would a book?

@xaueious - thanks for the fast reply, Advent Vega has been ordered, cant wait to get it and start playing about with it :D

Thanks in advance, I'm looking for:

1) web surfing, watching video , a decent rear camera would be nice but not necessary, ebook reading, gps would be nice but not necessary
2) willing to spend $400
3) i like the 7" form factor but 10" is good too.
4) i've been researching about a month so I can envision installing ROMs but the best out of the box performance possible would be nice. I'm open to tinkering but don't want something that will be a constant hobby maintaining.
5) Alaska, USA.

My hunt started with the Creative ZiiO but recently I've been looking at the Dell Streak 7 wifi and have heard that the battery life issue is better with the recent upgrade but have no way to confirm it. I don't have the ability to see its screen in person, so I don't know if the relatively low resolution would be irritating. I've also been looking at the Galaxy Tab wifi only version but again, I don't know if the screen resolution is a good trade-off for the single-core processor. See also Viewsonic G-Tablet, Archos A101 or A70, eLocity A7, etc.

I know it's sort of a broad search but do you have any thoughts?

also would be nice if i could use it to play poker on it but thats not essential as its just for me instead of laptop lol,

i have a budget of around £350- £400 for all 3 and i live in the uk
I have been looking at this one on ebay but not sure if i can get it cheaper or better for money elsewhere?

10" Super 2.2 Android EPAD Tablet 1Ghz HDMI UK Supplier on eBay (end time 25-Apr-11 10:06:25 BST)

I am looking for a 7" tablet to use for a baby monitor and some internet use. The main use is as a baby monitor. I know baby monitors are cheap but the screen is too small for me. We have a network camera setup in the baby's room. I have found an app to work on the android OS but no idea what kind of tablet to get. I would like to spend less then $150US. Please let me know what you think. Thank you for your time!

I'm looking for an 8". 4:3 tablet, with good screen, decent cpu and ram. it will be used by my kids to watch video (1080p not needed!), play games and draw pictures. It needs to be pretty reliable, sturdy and "production" ready. The new archos 8 with RK2918 looks a good bet, but not sure it will be available by the end of april.

Sorry to correct but its either the G-Tablet or Viewpad 10. There is no G-Tablet 10. Don't want you to get confused when buying! 2 very different products.

@madmalkav AMLogic products are looking good. I didn't realize the price as that low for the Ramos though. I thought it was closer to $200USD shipped.

@Panic69 Samsung's Galaxy Tab is dropping to around $400 with the wifi version. It is sufficient for most.

@thomas9580 You are better off fetching two good Advent Vega tablets rather three SuperPAD II tablets in my opinion, but it not market preinstalled. The SuperPAD II has some bugs to work out right now with market from what I read. You can try a online vendor instead of eBay, as long as you pay with a Paypal or escrow.

@njs170 The Coby Kyros MID7015 is probably okay for your needs.

@Iwindows I thought I read June for Archos RK2918...

Thanks for the quick response. I keep flip flopping but I definitely value your opinion. I may indeed be picking up the Galaxy tab in wifi only when it finally drops.

Cheers!

Eric

Xaueious, you are right, the $169 is a OEM version that have 4GB of disk instead of 8GB and no bluetooth. Saw some w10 for that $169 price in Aliexpress but I don't fide much on that site. I bought some days ago a WM8650 tablet for a ridiculous cheap price, let's see if it arrives and then I will consider goind for a W10 there .
