To Root or Not to Root?

Imitation is the SINCEREST form of flattery! LOL :)

Actually, you know what? And I'm only half-joking here: we have a few younger forum members who are answering questions (I don't mean you, you're a seasoned veteran!). I swear it feels like the wild, wild west, and people are vying to be the quickest gun! I'll have to hang up my six-shooter any day now, and get out of the way of the faster kids! :p

Well, I am glad to see it. I know that my first week on here (after I had been lurking for a week or two) I knew very few answers, but offered what help I could...it is the same with any new NC owner on here, and that is why this forum is growing so well...We don't have that snarkiness that sometimes shows its head over at the XDA forums (See the honeycomb thread in the general forums over there for that).

I hear you, Matt! I have the sense that some are more concerned with their post count and not the quality of their reply, especially on some of the other forums that I regularly participate in.

Mike

Mike, every forum is going to have those that are just padding their post count, so I guess its a good thing when two people respond in short succession with the same answer, it kinda takes the wind out of the sails of the post pad counters. We certainly don't want any bad information being circulated as legit.

(and notice, I responded to both in a single post, to avoid the aforementioned count padding! LOL :) )

And yes, I've been over on nookdevs. It's just taking a bit of time to get the lay of the land and to figure out which tips and procedures on which android sites or which nook forums are the most current, and co-applicable.
If one starts reading a sticky'd thread that's been there a while, they learn that that first half is obsolete and 'there's a better way now" but it's hard to figure out what the best (authoritative, comprehensive, and CURRENT) is. XDA guys may be a bit too cutting edge and tech savvy for this kid. Probably nookdev is right.
IMHO that is the most astute comment of the day!

I fully intend to buy this thing, go the the BN next door where they have a special Nook hour (usually a free book) at Noon today, and then sit in their internal starbucks, and jailbreak the thing before I even leave the BN.
OK, then. I'll be the first to contribute $10 to your "jailed for rooting and bragging about it" defense fund. ;)

last question before I shut down and go shopping (I'll hopefully see and answer my android phone)

Are the folks using gmail able to configure the gmail that comes with the autorooter in IMAP mode?
Pop3 would be a near deal breaker, as the whole point of all my off season (racing is my real biz) IT/google/android/tablet/phone meanderings is to be better connected/sync'd when on the road or trackside and away from my shop. I just migrated away from fixed clients and pop3 to the cloud and IMAP, so I hope the NC will have IMAP gmail so it can follow suite.

As for me, on the other hand...if my comment wasn't a blatant case of post-padding, I don't know what is!

Oh crap, Roger...my compliment was 100% sincere. I was just making fun of myself. I better shut-up now...

Mike?...darmeen? I'm ASSUMING the Android gmail client is IMAP. Roger, what phone do you have? Did you say Droid X?...I assumed it was an Android phone. If so, gmail works the same way on the Nook as it does on any Android phone. Either way, there is not a configuration option. Not sure I can offer help on this issue.

I only took it as sincere Matt. I'm just being self critical because I'm used to being the guy who knows what's going on, whereas here I'm the confused newb.
I have an Epic4g android phone (A2.1 supposedly about to rev to 2.2 - which is why I've backed off my A2.2 tablet requirement. I'll update the tablet after it happens on the phone. At the rate things are progressing, it will probably be easier and less buggy every week I wait, so I'm just going to go with both devices on 2.1 for now. Darn, my last autorooter zip is taking a long time to finish downloading. I should be on the road by now.

Its IMAP. If I have my gmail app open on my NC and on my PC and modify an email (archive, delete, etc) the change happens in both places. If it were POP, this would not be the case until a refresh was done

Perfect, and thanks. Just what I needed to finish it. Laptop shutting down now and I'm off to the shops.
THANKS ALL!!!

Epic, wow...what a gorgeous phone. The only phone besides my Droid that I've lusted to own (love your physical keyboard...and THAT screen!).

For some reason download on the autonooter can take 2 minutes one day and an hour the next. Too bad it doesn't seem to be hosted elsewhere.

Good luck and update us when you're done!

PS FYI, don't be disappointed when you see that Contacts don't sync (I bet you already know this). There is an app to import them--I don't think it fixes contacts, but what it does is allow for auto-complete in gmail. If you're going to use gmail on the Nook a lot, it's probably important to have them.

IMAP = push, POP3 = pull (poll)?

As a follow up, I selected 4 emails on my NC and archived them...about 30 seconds later they were not in my inbox on my PC.

I actually don't think that it is IMAP (for our purposes) but rather the app is acting just like a simplified version of the website. We don't have to setup the account (no smtp settings, etc).

NOW! The Email app (not gmail app) is POP only, no IMAP available. So as long as you are using the actual GMAIL app, should be fine.

The gmail app even does a local cache of emails, and when you choose to archive (wifi off) it disappears from your inbox in the app, and when you turn wifi back on, they archive on the PC.

Probably more than anyone really wanted to know, but knowledge is good.

"The POP protocol requires the currently connected client to be the only client connected to the mailbox. In contrast, the IMAP protocol specifically allows simultaneous access by multiple clients and provides mechanisms for clients to detect changes made to the mailbox by other, concurrently connected, clients."

With POP accounts, you choose to leave messages on the polled server or not...with IMAP that question is irrelevant.

Nono...this is good info. I always hope to understand how things work under the hood. Thanks for elaborating!
