Wbat is Android up to?

Since this is my first Android device, there are some behaviors that confuse me. When I put my S7 to bed I make sure all apps are closed and I put it in airplane mode to save battery power. When I get up in the morning lots of apps that were closed are now open and my battery is mostly drained. Why do apps open on their own? I'm looking at them in the list pulled up by the Info icon in the top right corner.

It looks like we have a bug in our tablets kernel.
Try do not put the tablet on airplane mod and it will be ok.
On airplane mod our tablet it keep restarting.
