You can stop Gmail from syncing without stoping calendar, etc, from syncing.

Go to Settings->Accounts->Google

Select your gmail address at the top.

You'll then have a list of all the apps that sync with your Google account and can disable syncing for them individually. Just disable Gmail syncing and leave the rest syncing.
