I would like a 7" tab the can download by wifi, EPub books, see photos from my thumb drive, use outlook express, and in general let my browse the web at a reasonable speed, use skype, have 2.3 to 3.x. , be able to view YouTube and Netflix.... and be under $100. The rest is a plus.

So my laptop is 6 years old and for what I use if for, I'm thinking of just upgrading to one of the newer tablets. I've been looking at either the nexus 7 or the new kindle fire HD (7 inch), but if there are better options out there, I'd love to know about them.

1) what you will be using the tablet for. list any features you need,
Web browsing: facebook, gmail, CNN, Netflix, Pandora radio, a couple browser games like "Ikariam". I think my browser game uses Adobe Flash. As a avid gym goer, I'd also like to use it to watch movies while I plow through my 1 hour long treadmill sessions. Because of the movies, and the differences between the fire and the nexus, I'm trying to decide if google play or amazon prime would be more financially sound for me as well. Right now I'm thinking amazon prime as i've surfed their selections and I'd probably take advantage of a lot of their free content that they offer through their membership. (an Ipad is out of my price range so i'm not even considering it.) i'd also use it for reading, and the new kindle seems to be slightly better suited for it.

I'm not an apps junkie, though there are a few I'd really like to have. Those few seem to be pretty common and available on both. GPS would be a plus, but thats what my smart phone will be for.

I think wifi would be fine. I looked at 3G, but i could always pre-load my rented movies to use at the gym, and I think my gym may have wifi, though how good it is, I do not know.
16 Gig storage may be fine, though I'm looking at the 32 Gig Kindle HD as well, just in case. they have cloud storage thought so not sure if i'd need it.

2) how much you are willing to spend

up to $350 dollars probably, could go higher if need be

3) if you have an idea, what the size of the tablet should be

7-10inch

4) how much you know about Android, or just whether or not you are computer literate

Not that much :(...don't know what rooting or side loading are, though I've seen many references on other sites

5) Please list your location : USA

PS. From my post, anyone reading it could probably see I'm leaning towards the new Kindle Fire, but I've read alot on how the Nexus is so much more versatile. I guess I'm wondering if my thinking is sound or if I'm not making the right considerations. I'd also like to know if there is anything else i could look at. (i've also looked at the Samsung Galaxy Tab but I don't think it fits my criteria as well. (dual cameras and an SD card are not big on my list.)

Hi, new here and looking to buy my first tablet. It will be used primarily for business purposes with recreation as a second place bonus. There's a specific short list of requirements that I would need but having a hard time finding the right tablet. I figured this would be the place to point me in the right direction! I work for a small inspection and QC company who specializes mostly in industrial power boilers and think tablets will help us do our work more efficiently for reasons like having access to drawings/files in the field and note taking with direct references to pictures. I have owned a rooted HTC Desire and pretty familiar with Androids ability but (don't bash ) have jumped on the iphone band wagon since changing carriers. Having owned both I feel the Android would be best suited for my business needs. So on to my requirements...

Must Haves

  • Ability to ruggedize. I'm pretty sure Otterbox has a case for virtually any tablet but this is a definite must since it will be taken in some of the hottest, dirtiest, and most cramped spaces you've ever seen. I have never broken a phone with an otterbox in this line of work so I figure a tablet could survive.
  • Camera WITH A FLASH. I was surprised to find this a hard to find feature on many tablets. Virtually all pictures taken will be in low/no light areas. Pictures are very important and the ability to take them on a tablet as I'm taking notes will be a big help, although I'm sure I will still need a good digital camera with me for any critical, high resolution shots that will need to be taken.
  • Battery life. If it can't last almost a full work day then it will likely be useless. That being said a full work day would not include watching movies or playing games all day but rather in and out of standby throughout the day. My biggest complaint with my Desire was the battery life and while battery saving apps worked well it would usually need charging on a busy day of using it.
  • Micro SD card slot. I feel this is a must mostly due to the possibility that if it does get dropped and broken into a hundred pieces I can still retrieve the card.

Nice to Haves

  • Price...I'm trying to stay under $400. This will be a trial run to a tablets usefulness in our line of work so don't want to break the bank. If it's liked then upgrades can come later.
  • Performance/stability. I don't believe I will be using any high demand apps but it's nice when you push the button stuff happens. Probably the biggest performance demand I would need is the ability to scroll around fairly large pdf files without any major lag.
  • Screen brightness. Again, it will mostly be used in dark areas but the ability to see it on a sunny day would be a plus.
  • Screen size. I was thinking a 7" would be best for portability but a 10" would be fine.

Hope I'm not asking for the impossible but any recommendations would greatly be appreciated.

I"m looking for something for my kids, primarily.

1) what you will be using the tablet for. list any features you need, such as g-sensor, gps, bluetooth, Adobe Flash, or any specific apps
for them, something that they can play educational games, handwriting, coloring, math, etc... (my oldest is 4 YO). Hes HOOKED on moms iphone, but i need something to take them away from that.
for me (because i cant leave stuff like that alone) something capable of playing PVZ, angry birds, etc... (I'm hooked on haypi kingdom, but i dont know if it works on tablets or not) and browsing the web with flash, checking e-mails, youtube, etc... nothing extreme (i hope)
WIFI and expandable memory (micro, SD) is a must. im not pickey on the type of touch technology, as long as hand-written letters and numbers can be recognized easily.
GPS, bluetooth, etc isnt necessary.
cam would be nice, but not necessary.

2) how much you are willing to spend
I have a galaxy sII, so i don't know how much something comparable would cost...
I'm hoping between $100-200, but I'm willing to come up a little if need be. im not sure if matching the SII would be overkill for my needs.

3) if you have an idea, what the size of the tablet should be
7 or 10, not picky.

4) how much you know about Android, or just whether or not you are computer literate
I don't mind "tweaking" it, as long as there are guides or walk-throughs on how to do it. I have been working with PCs for quite some time, but I'm new to android.

5) Please list your location somewhere. (You should really include it in your profile, by the way)
USA, Wisconsin to be exact.

thanks for your help guys.... there are so many options out there; it makes my head spin.

the one was a 48 hour special but they have the 7 inch pandigital for 59, very cheap. u need to register for their email specials' daily deals etc. sometimes that is the only way to see there better specials. hope this helps.

Thanks, dlbott, If you think that will handle my needs, ill look for that. Considering this will be my first tablet, I'm just afraid of wasting my money on junk by getting the wrong one; something underpowered that will just end up on my desk that's already full of outdated, underpowered crap i can bring myself to get rid of.

Thanks again.

1) what you will be using the tablet for. list any features you need, such as g-sensor, gps, bluetooth, Adobe Flash, or any specific apps
- I want to have the Google Play Market
- I want to be able to have a Nice Display
- The COBY I had was SLOW.

2) how much you are willing to spend
- I want to spend as little as possible (Preferably under $150.00)
3) if you have an idea, what the size of the tablet should be
- 7”-10”
4) how much you know about Android, or just whether or not you are computer literate
- I am very familiar with “Rooting” but would like a device with a lot of support and easy root. I am not good with Linux Commands etc.
5) Please list your location somewhere. (You should really include it in your profile, by the way)
- Scranton, Pennsylvania

I am currently returning the below tablet. (For these reasons)
It was very hard to find support for Rooting. I was not able to root this. I have rooted my wife’s Droid Razr, I have rooted my Galaxy Nexus and I have also rooted my droid X in the past. I run all custom ROMs and I am very familiar with the process.
It was very slow. Seemed to LAG a lot when I would type and click. I am assuming that the 512 RAM is why it is slow. I am used to faster response.
The screen was not clear. Some of the text is hard to read. I may be used to reading on my Galaxy Nexus.

Hello,

It's genius to have this thread.

I think my situation is unusual... I'm looking for a tablet that I can use my MS Natural keyboard (the older white model) with. These keyboards are PS2, but I have a PS2->USB adapter that works with a normal computer (which I'm hoping would therefore work with a tablet through a USB-A connector).

My scenario is using the tablet normally (checking email, web surfing, reading PDFs, doing crosswords) most of the time, but being able to hook up my keyboard when I need to type something that's more than a short sentence. Though I claim to be computer-literate (I put together my own desktop machines, run my http server on OpenBSD, have moderate Perl and C knowledge), I have no idea how much extra power the full-sized keyboard would use, so perhaps battery life would be an issue?

Options that would be nice to have (but not deal-breakers) would be a camera and flash support (mainly for youtube).

I'm in Canada and I'm pretty open about the price range. This is in place of a laptop as I find the scissor-switch style keyboards to be tough on my tendinitis.
