The One 'Do I Buy This', 'What Do I Buy', 'I'm Looking For' Thread

My apologies if this post is not in the right category, but what I would like to know is how to take a .pdf file
from my laptop and put it on my A500 tab. I have several ebooks that I would like to have on my tablet.
any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am a 47 year old, would-be nerd looking to buy a tablet. But this market is so confusing.... I can NOT SLEEP! Wow! There are so many variables! I guess I should resign myself to purchasing three or four of these devices before I find one I like.

My criteria/criterion is what and how many gizmos, that I now carry, that can I replace.

At the moment I carry, in my waist pouch, an mp3 player, a (video)camera, a phone, a flash drive, a map (made of paper), a paperback book(!) , a paper(!) notebook, and in my rucksack a notebook (Panasonic toughbook) PC, and, yes, a full sized keyboard.

I want a tablet that can replace as many of these things as possible.

I am sick of wearing a rucksack. I want everything to fit in my waist/fanny pouch. (as an Englander, I apologize for using the word "fanny")

I started off by wanting to replace the paper.
1) I want an ebook. I looked at Kindle. But I know I would be pissed off with a device that is primarily passive. I want a Kindle app. (I am an amazon addict, so epub will not do)
2) I want a GPS. I get lost. I want to track my bike rides. I looked a garmin etc but why pay 200 USD or more for a garmin (or Holux) GPS when I can get a tablet!? Yeah.
3) I want to take notes, in meetings, in conferences. I have tried the touch screen keyboard in a tablet and I was impressed, but the ability to attach a full sized keyboard when I go to meetings is a major plus. Ha. Hence I need a OTG (what the heck does that mean? On the Go apparently) or Bluetooth keyboard.

I am not sure I can replace any of my gizmos.
1) I am interested in replacing my flash drive. I carry a 64GB flash drive but I could get away with 32GB.
2) I don't think I can replace my camera. I carry a Xacti HD2000 which takes poor stills but good full HD video. I have been hoping for a another device to replace my camera but glass is important. No mobile phone takes good photos in my experience. I was really interested in the Kodak Zi8 which had the form factor (I mean shape) of a tablet but it has been discontinued. Since I can't replace my camera, the ability to view its mpg4 H2.63 videos would be a plus. A not-dead awful camera would help.
3) I don't want to carry a PC (my panny tough book) any more because it is too big. But I do need a full sized keyboard in order to be able to write at the massively fast typing speed that I am now typing at! I want to be able to take simultaneous dictation, that I can almost do with a Panny notebook PC and a keyboard.
4) I am almost sure I can replace my mp3 player but not entirely. My mp3 player is an iRiver that allows me to connect a microphone. Likewise my video camera (aforementioned Sanyo Xacti) also has a microphone jack. Asians are not interested in their voice. I am. I am a logo-phono-centrist. I like making documentaries. I see NO tablets with a microphone jack. I give up.

I wish that there were normal USB ports. I am not sure what OTG means but I don't care. Give me normal USB.

Finally I want robust ease of use
1) Are there no waterproof or even water resistant tablets?! Why not!? Don't these Asians go out? (I cycle all over the place. My waist pouch gets wet)
2) What is the significance of plastic/aluminium cases?
3) Why are all the screens made of glass and are some stronger than others?
4) What is the emphasis on thin? I would be happy with fat. 1.25 cm is fine. 2 cm would be fine.
5) Battery life is important.
6) Weight is utterly insignificant (I am looking to replace a PC)
7) USB charging would help (since I spend my life in front of PCs)

Finally in addition to Kindle, I would like to be able to access Gmail, Blogger, Youtube, Facebook, Yahoo auctions, pdf, doc, excel, ppt

Addendum: I have ordered a SmartQ X7 because it has GPS, is fast and the battery lasts a long time. It is billed as a Nexus 7 beater (cause it has a card slot). I was attracted to the company by the SmartQ U7 tablet with projector! Sadly that did not have GPS. I found these products by searching for a GPS 7 inch tablet and then displaying highest price 1st. I have also ordered a mini HDMI to VGA adapter so I'll be able to use my table for simple powerpoint or web presentations.

well I did not get any answers to my questions, so I bit the bullett and purchased a Ployer Mamo * "Ployer Momo8 IPS Tablet PC - 8 Inch Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean), IPS SCREEN; BLUETOOTH; WIFI; ROCKCHIP RK3066 DUAL CORE - 2 X CORTEX A9; QUAD GPU -
Through Amazon it shipped today, I have read s lot of good more than bad. At least with Amazon it is a easy return. If it is not what I want.

In answer to totalnoob, I use color note on my tablets and Phone replaces paper, any tablet that accepts a micro sd should be able to be used as a MP3 player with plenty of room, I have 30 albums on my phone. I also have a usb keyboard/case so as long as the tablet you get comes with an adapter or accepts a standard usb you whould be able to use a keyboard. I do not know what OTG is for but I do know that they have Bluetooth keyboards which connects like a bluetooth headset for your phone. I also just purchased a digital recording device about the size of a flash drive as I hate taking notes. Will let you know how it works. Good luck with your search
. Hope some of this helps

Totalnoob.

You can use the micro-USB slot with a micro-USB to USB cable to connect to your laptop or you can load the pdfs into an micro SD card inside a SD card adapter, and then take out the microSD from the adapter, and slot it into your tablet. The full sized USB slot will not connect to your laptop but is for connecting keyboards drives.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 review
"on the right side you'll find the dedicated power jack and a pair of USB slots: one micro-USB to transfer data to the tablet, and one full-size USB port which connects with both your storage drives and keyboards right out of the box."

Hello all, I'm getting a tablet this month but I'm stuck between a couple. The Asus TF700 and the Google Nexus 10. I originally wanted a Windows 8 System but after messing around with one and doing some research and finding out the apps that I use on my android phone are not available I have decided to go back to Android. The tablet will be used to surf the net, social apps listen to some music watch a movie here and there and play some games. I'm not the guy that hacks everything I get my hands on but I am computer literate. My budget is about $600 so I shouldn't be limited much. Any help is greatly appreciated. One of my main concerns between the two tablets is will the additional gb ram make up the difference of having a dual core processor compared to the quad core, being able to use a micro or standard sd card. If I go with the Asus I will probably be getting the keyboard. Thanks in advance

Hi aprill, welcome to the forum. Glad you decided to join us here at Android Tablets.

What's everyone's opinions on the Zenithink C94 vs. the upcoming Ainol Novo 10 Captain? I know the Captain isn't out yet but spec-wise, isn't the C94 pretty close? On flsuperstore it says it's running Ice Cream Sandwich but it should be ROMable (?) to Jellybean pretty quickly, no?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a tablet for casual use, just reading files, browsing the web, watching videos etc. Not particularly worried about the size of the tablet, probably just a 7". I'm looking to buy a MID tablet that costs less than $100, and was wondering if anyone had any particular recommendations for sellers/features etc. I'm pretty computer literate and can easily learn things, and I'm from Canada.
I wanted to get one of the MID tablets off of Ebay and I was wondering if anyone had previously purchased one and how it had turned out/ who they had purchased it from etc.

Thanks muchly :)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a 10 inch tablet that will complement my job as a beer sales rep. I will need something to access account information, product information, price spreadsheets, send emails, browse the web, and take notes (with other stuff thrown in). Currently I carry around a bag with a couple of spiral-bound notebooks, some folders, and a netbook running Windows 7. Juggling everything around and having to rummage through my bag makes me look and feel unprofessional, and I'm hoping that a tablet will help me become more organized and streamline my daily tasks.

I'm willing to spend in the ballpark of $500. The tablet that I've really had my eye on is the Samsung Note 10.1 because I like the feel of using the stylus and the Multi Screen feature (that was after playing with one for about 10 minutes at Best Buy). The Asus Transformer was also nice, and I've also looked at the iPad for the hell of it (I have used Apple products all my life, but the iPhone and iPad are the two things I never liked).

I am pretty familiar with the Android OS. My current phone is a Razr Maxx running ICS, my previous phone was a Moto Droid 1, and I have a cheap-o Coby 7" tablet that I use as an e-reader. I don't like to use the Coby for anything too intensive because it has a resistive screen and it is pretty slow.

Thanks in advance!

How to ask a good question
Tell us:
1) what you will be using the tablet for. list any features you need, such as g-sensor, gps, bluetooth, Adobe Flash, or any specific apps
2) how much you are willing to spend
3) if you have an idea, what the size of the tablet should be
4) how much you know about Android, or just whether or not you are computer literate
5) Please list your location somewhere. (You should really include it in your profile, by the way)

I am in the market for a new Android tablet. Some of my needs are capacitive touch, Android 4.0 or better, good battery life, Flash capable, and decent build.

I will web surfing, Google Play app d/loads, YouTube, NetFlix, email, webapps and word processing? I'll also let my kids do some educational games.

I'd like to keep it to approx $200 USD.

I'd like a 9.7" (nothing smaller than a 9).

I have an Android phone so I am familiar w/it.

I am in San Francisco.

With my budget, I doubt I'll be getting any 'brand' names, so i found the Zenethink C97 (9.7" Zenithink C97 Dual-Core Google Android Tablet CyanogenMod 10 Jelly Bean 4.1). Is this any good or will I constantly be 'patching' problems?

Should I up my budget to get a brand name? The Asus TF300 can be had for a little more than $300 (ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T-A1-CG Tablet - Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, NVIDIA Tegra 3 1.2GHz, 1GB DDR3, 16GB Flash Storage, 10.1 Multi-Touch Screen, Dual Webcams, Champagne at TigerDirect.com).

I am open to suggestions and looking for some guidance. Thanks in advance.

I have an old Coby Kyros 7015, so I am thinking about buying a new tablet.

I am thinking about getting an Ainol Novo 10 Hero or a Momo12. Which one should I get?

both are good choices, between the two Ainol Novo 10.

I'm foolish and impatient so I'm starting to lean heavily towards the Ainol Hero 10, as opposed to waiting for the Ainol Captain. Do you think the Captain would be worth the wait? I have no baseline for comparison when it comes to these new tablets. I've been playing around with my father's 1st gen Asus Transformer and while I REALLY like it, it feels a bit sluggish. But I'm comparing it to a Core i7 desktop and a Core2Duo laptop, and a 1st gen iPad. It just doesn't feel as....slick as the iPad. Maybe it's just me....
::shrugs::
