(How To) Installing/Using ClockworkMod, Rom manager, nandroid backup, custom kernels

Ok, I did a backup with CWmodR on my sd card, not my internal storage, all the necessary files are on my SD card after backup like in the 1st tutorial. So will the updates from B&N automatically be blocked now, or what do I have to do to make sure they're blocked. I'm not really interested in revving my NC up anymore, I have it rooted and a lot of fun apps, and I just want to keep it that way now, but I have very minimal understanding of this stuff (I did the rooting and the CWR by watching a youtube video-because I don't really get this stuff), so please put it in laymen's terms if you could pretty please. I just want to make sure I don't lose my root and have to do all this all over again. Thank you so much.

The only surefire way of blocking the over the air updates is to have CWR installed internally, because it is actually changing the way the NC operates (that's why people are having difficulty doing the 8 failed reboots and the pwr+n to reset back to default, because CWR is doing what is supposed to do) Its like CWR won't allow the OTA update to physically install and break your root. Once you have CWR installed, you don't HAVE TO overclock and the other stuff, it just allows you the ability to do those things. I would recommend for every rooted user to have CWR installed at this point because I have a feeling the next update from B&N is going to be a biggin, and if you don't have protections in place, there is a creek you'll be adrift on without a way to propel yourself.

Of course, those that have moved on to custom ROM's don't have to worry about the B&N update, because the custom ROM they are running internally is not the B&N version of android anymore.

^ That is an interesting question and situation. Internally installed CWR will block all OTA's but I'm not sure about CWR ran off SD. I would imaging if the sd card is always left in the NC.

I don't think it would work like that rico...because you can't just run your nook normally if you have a bootable CWR installed...it hasn't been flashed to the internal memory, so it isn't functioning at its normal capacity anyway.

Trying to do a back up. CWR starts a then hangs up at Backing up system... Can't mount /system! Anything I should do differently? Not sure if this is because I just updated to 3.0.0.6

Hello,

I am new to this android device. I got a nook color and rooted it. Then I came acroos this thread and I thought it would be interesting to try. When I was running the recovery clockwork, it failed in mid-stream. I couldn't get out of this application. There was no exit.

Eventually I decided to reboot. After booting up the device briefly, it always goes back to recovery clockwork. I don't know what to do.

I don't have any image file on sdCard I could use to boot from.

I think I might have bricked my nook color. Can anyone please help?

You're not bricked and all you need to do is create a recovery SD card to boot from. Check out the thread and then ask if you have questions. Chances are the people here will help you get you nook working in no time flat.

Thanks for the quick response J515OP. I found the thread just for this problem. I will download the image and restore the nook color.

OK home now. :)

@samC
Sometimes we answer without asking questions to properly troubleshoot. Don't do anything yet.

questions:
-What b&n software are you on?
-What root method did you use? what autonooter?
-What function in CWR, did you preform?

I downloaded the file. It requires me to flash the files. I don't know how to do that. Do you use win32diskimager? But the unzip file doesn't contain any disc image file.

Yep, falshing back to new will solve your problems but may not be necessary. Some additional info will help determine that.

You are in good hands with rico, he's the best. Listen to him and you'l be good as new in no time.

I asked this in the release thread but that might have been the inappropriate place. I bought a Nook Color and rooted it today for the first time. I've been following information at this very helpful board. I was attempting to do a backup following this thread. The first time nothing was backed up and Clockwork told me it it couldn't mount the /system. Using the removal thread, I took Clockwork off my system and used the ROM manager to add it again. This time it backed up data (though not all the things shown in the directions) but I got several messages saying it could not /mount the cache.

I'd really like to avoid re doing everything, but I'm not that far along. I'm rooted with the vanilla 2.1 and then added the 1.1 update. After that I over clocked to 1000ghz and the system seems nice and speedy. But I can't backup. Any advice, I'm brand new I might be doing something dumb.

Obviously, I know very little about android. I am a bit confused with the terminology used. I have some questions about the very basics.
What is flashing files and how?
What is 8 failed and power+n? (I know how to do power+n, but not 8 failed)

To answer your questions:

I am on v1.1 rooted.
I used auto-rooter-3.0.0
I was just running clockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.6

I got a message something like can't open /cache.....
I am not quite sure. The process stopped.

And I couldn't get back. Even after reboot many time including power+n.

Please guide me through the recovery process. If it is possible to recover that is. Thanks.

It's (almost)always possible to recover. Did you take out the microsd?

Alright....
Well a lot I see here and many of use here have seen this before.
First are you going way too fast and do too many procedures at once. Also you are asking really basic questions which tells me, and don't take this the wrong way, you are not quite ready for using CWR and flashing.

I'll make these answers short:
Flashing is refereed to as applying a rom, theme, keyboard, kernel to a android device's installed software.
The how to flash can be found on the first post of this thread.
The 8 boot interrupts and power button + "n" are two steps used in the stock recovery (not CWR) for preforming a factory restore.

B&N 1.1 software causes boot loops when you do a backup in CWR.
CWR 3.0.0.6 is brand new, some people are having problems with it and as of now it can only be properly installed from usb adb command prompt.

Since I'm not quite sure what you have done to attempt to fix you problem, I would say uninstall CWR to restore your stock recovery.
That would be a great place to start. Get you back working and put working with CWR for the time being.
Use this tutorial to remove CWR: http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook-color-technical/8526-how-restore-stock-recovery-cwr.html

And just a bit of advice, using CWR and flashing is a little advanced so if you are new, I'd stay with just rooting the NC, installing apps and enjoying the device until you gain more knowledge on this more techy features.

Thanks Rico2001. I am not offended at all. I know I was doing something beyond my ability. So I will keep working on it and see how far it will take me.

=======================

After I have done the procedures, I am now got stuck at the big n after I boot. ????
