Synrgic Dreambook W7

I have been running mine on an Optus SIM card but have tried my 3g Telstra Australia card in it and it is recognised.

I am going to change it over to telstra after the Optus credit runs out as I am not happy with the Optus coverage.

oh man..I have gone thru ever page of this thread.
this was one of the tablets I really thought about getting since it has GPS and 7 inch 1024x600. But most of this thread seems to be about things not working as opposed to things working and hacking it to make it better.

aside from the issue of the super fast car speed, does the GPS at least work well? does it tell you to make a turn way before you are there because of the speed it thinks the car is travelling?

Eugene188.......

I can honestly say the Dreambook is an extremely well built tablet..... BUT, and it's a big one to me........

I've tried both Copilot and Tomtom. The "reported speed" issue plays havoc with the software because this value is used to calculate how long it will take you to reach your destination or your next turning point. Also if the radio feature of this device interests you I would suggest you look at buying a radio !!!

I've emailed Kathy at Synrgic about the radio and gps problems and her reponse was something like (not word for word);
"Yes this happens sometimes. Hopefully we will produce a firmware version which resolves the gps".
Kathy made no reference to the Radio not working. After you've paid the shipping and taxes this isn't a "cheap chinese tablet", but it is very well constructed.

As I see it the problems with buying this device are;
- The GPS only really works with googlemaps so forget using it in GPS mode rather than AGPS. The GPS doesn't feed the correct data to the unit for software to read.
- The radio just doesn't work
- I was sent the latest unit running B02V03-20110509(HD105) and was told by Synrgic this was the most current firmware wth no explanation of what V25 Firmware on their site is for. I still don't know what the correct firmware should be.
- Their firmware update process is incorrectly documented.

On the plus side I haven't experienced th 3G drop-outs that others have experienced and the wifi is fine. The screen is nice and clear and is surprisingly responsive.

If all this still doesn't put you off.......go for it. In fact buy mine !! Otherwise I would buy a GPS or wait for synrgic to produce a fix for the speed problem.

Cheers

Just received my Dreambook here in Australia...build 20110525(HD105) and everything seems good...tried a Vodafone (3) sim and works ok...tried Optus Sim, also worked ok.

A couple of comments:
1. The opening post states the unit is 300 grams...mine weighs 480 grams so it is a lot heavier then I had hoped
2. The screen is so darn hard to touch and requires an extremely firm finger touch for a touch to be recognised...extremely not happy about this
3. There isn't any instructions anywhere on how exactly and which way to insert the sim card...took a bit of trial and error to know which way it goes

One test that I need to do is to find out if our telco company Telstra and their own branded NextG works...NextG is UMTS 850 MHZ frequency...if it does then great...if not then it will have very limited use here in Australia

Only had it for a couple of hours now so will explore it further

Try to install and use a different Launcher. I used ADWLauncher and it seems the touches respond well.

Sometimes I receive SMS, sometimes don't. I have downgraded to V24 (HD104) due to 3G issues. Voice mail icon never appears, in any version.
I haven't noticed before, but Sygic GPS software also reports twice the speed...

I wounder where the SMS disapears ??? They are not left at the SMS-C (Server), if I move the SIM to another phone the incomming SMSs are not on the server anymore.

So the Dreambook always downloads them, and then just throws them away instead of placing them in the Message app and displaying them

Real strange.....

My case is really weird, i cannot send/receive SMS using my SIM card, but if I insert other SIM cards (my wife and my daughter's), it can send/receive messages. So I dont know it the problem is with my SIM card, because when I use my SIM card on other phone, everything is fine.

Well, I have had my Dreambook for a couple of days now and it is broken...it won't turn on anymore, there is a green light on at the bottom of the unit and it is charged but pressing the on button it just won't turn on.

The unit is completely useless outside...I took both my Ipad and the Dreambook outside into the sun light and whilst the Ipad was still usable the Dreambook was not...the glass (or whatever it is) screen has far too much reflection or the unit isn't bright enough. The Radio is also useless as mentioned before and in terms of weight, it is far too heavy at 480 grams to be a nice unit to carry around and use.

I had high hopes for the Dreambook to resell through our shop but not a good start...oh, I also emailed Synrgic support last Friday with a question and did not receive an answer at all...any other good 7" tablets out there?

UPDATE: Fixed the powering up problem by the great helpful hint at:

Yep, no SIM no SDCARD, it says an android phone, when hardware wizard appears (by pressing power button).
Ehehehe, dunno how to erase data on inand, because it unmounted drive.. poor me... :)

Sent from my X10 TripNMiUI-IRIS using Android Tablet Forum

OK, thinking about this, if you are getting the Android Phone installed then you will need to go to your devices control panel, uninstall the Android phone, then re-install it with the imxusb drivers in the mfgtools....\drivers folder from the mfg download. After that the mfg program will see the tablet and you are good to go.

Ok. I received the mini-usb OTG adapter and it works like a charm. I am now typing using my case/keyboard that I bought. Really cool that I kinda turned my Tablet into a Netbook.

Mine finally arrived. For sure is plug and play, both for mouse and keyboard, but my notification bar sometimes disappear... I also got a HDMI x mini HDMI cable, and worked efortlessly. The thing is that one needs to have a mouse for using the tablet with TV, as the touchscreen goes completely off when tablet is connected to a TV. This means no touchscreen and no multi-touch.

The screen resolution that the phone sends to TV is higher than the TV's resolution, so the borders of the images on TV are cropped. My TV is 1280x720, and Dreambook is 1024x600. I'm wondering how it would work on a full HD TV.

Upgraded to V25 (104)

Now everything works, Calls, 3G Data, Sending/Reciveing SMS, GPS navigaton ec

Really starting to love the thing....

Edit: Well GPS still shows 2*Speed which makes my navigation sw acting a bit strange and now with V25 the 3G connection refuses to reconnect if it drops momentarily.

By the way how do I know If I have a 104 or 105 HW so I am using correct firmware ???

Time to downgrade again ???? Or maybe try 105 ????

As far as I observed, if you use HD105 on a HD104 tablet, the radio will finally work (good), but your charging led will never go off (bad), your tabley will be much slower (worse) and will power up only if connected to a computer through USB (this was the way out I found when I used HD105 on my HD104).

Decided to stay on V25 anyway. The unit is programmed to prefer Wifi over 3G and only drops the 3G if it finds a Wifi hotspot that it tries to switch over to. If i select WiFi = off i can use 3G all day long without any drop-outs at all.

Then I only switch on WiFi when I really would like to connect to a hotspot, e.g. at home or at the hotel.
