(How To) CM7 Bootable SD

JP -

I'm back with an installation question -
If I power the NC off, take the SDcard out that has the CM7 system on it, and create an image with win32diskimager and save it on my laptop -

1) Can I then write that image back onto another SD card with win32diskimager and simply plug it into the NC and boot it up again?
2) Does the "replacement" sdcard have to be equal in size, or can I use a larger capacity SDcard with the same image that's been saved on the laptop?

I'm thinking about buying a couple of cards and testing them for the highest speed (small block random writes) and then selecting the best one from the batch.

As always, thanks for your assistance !

Cheers,
Lew

Wellcome LHC, just curious what B&N is selling right now....did you check what version your nook was as soon as you took it out of the box, you know under settings- my nook color? Where did your friend buy it from? Thank you and enjoy your nook.
Gloria

Hi Gloria - I checked the version tonight - the one I got out of the box is 1.2

Hi Lew,

I've previously done what you're asking. Yes you can create an image and burn it on another microSD.
It has to at least be the same size or larger but definitely not smaller.

In my case, I had a CM7 image from my 4Gig Sandisk microSD, then burned it into an 8Gig Transcend microSD. To recover and use the rest of the space on the 8Gig card, I used Easeus partition master.

I hope this helps.

A friend is about to buy the nook and I was trying to figure out if thete are still any old versions on the market, I guess not. Thank you Lew and Tom.Gloria

So, I did it I got all the CM7 and gapps stuff on a Sundisk sd card and my nook booted and I loooove the feeling, is smooth like the skin of a baby! I got the market to open but I couldn' t dowlnload anything and so I' m thinking I' m going to re download everything....should I try a different card?
I got hooked on to CM7 in just 5 minutes of use,it's amazing!! I must have it no matter what it takes.

Good for you, I am glad you finally did it.

1. Was your wifi connected the whole time? 2. Did you get any error messages or just touch to download and nothing would happen?

It shouldn't have anything to do with the card itself. The good news is now that you know the process if you want to format the card and try again from scratch it shold be easy.

Where do i find these to download at?
1. Download generic-sdcard-v1.2.1.img and unzip thefile.
2. Download update-cm-7.0.3-encore-signed zip file(CM7 stable).
3. Download gapps-gb-20110307-signed zip file(latest google apps).

Anything special to do, if i want to create an image of CM7 that was burned on an sd card for me to back it up? Software etc

All of the files can be found via the links in the first post.

Not sure I understand your second question. Are you asking how to backup your CM7 card once you have creadted a bootable CM7 Sd card?

JP, yes the wifi was on, no problem with that and when I couldn' install , first thing I thought was to check if I was still connected and I was. It does say something like error I think when I tryed to install an app and a n icon appears like a triangle with an exclamatin mark.gg

Hi there, I'm sorry if this question has already been answered, but I was unable to find it lol. I know I've read that running cm7 off the usd card this way leaves the stock software alone, allowing you to remove the usd and have you're original nook os running again. I love the idea of this, being that I just got my new nook color and don't want to root it or anything. I actually paid for the extended 2yr warranty and I don't want to do anything to void it. I noticed that the instructions mention a point were you have let it install and restart your nook. That has me a little concerned, I first found out about running other os form sd with Honeycomb (which is supposed to leave warranty intact) and it just started up the first time i put it in, no install or restart. So, if I follow thees steps and run cm7 from the usd card, will I keep my warranty?

Are you still having this issue? I am guessing not or you would have said something more by now.

Yes, everything happens on the card only.

Thank you so much for letting me know, that's the only thing that's been holding me back. This is going to be so cool if I can get it to work :-D
One other question, why is the generic-sdcard-v1.2.1 burned unzipped? I've seen other sites say to unzip it first. Also which should I do if I use the size agnostic sd card image?

(Sorry I'm really new to this and I've tried to do as much research as I can but not a lot make since to me and some of the sites are conflicting)

generic-sdcard-v1.2.1 is the size agnostic sd card image. You asked why is it burned unzipped and then said other sites say to unzip it. No conflict there unless you meant one of those to ask about leaving it zipped. Steps 1 and 4 both say unzipped. In any case image files must always be unzipped prior to burning. To some this might be confusing sice just about everything else you do does require the file to be zipped (flashing kernerls, ROMs, etc.)

Just follow the steps in the first post exactly and you shouldn't have any issues.
