(How To) CM7 Bootable SD

It does sound like it might be the SD port itself which I have heard of problems with both for internal and external readers. Do you have an aversion to formatting the card in the Nook itself? Just boot to your rooted Nook, insert the card, go to settings and unmount then format. Fresh clean card no hassel.

JP - didn't realize it could be done that easily! I can definitly try that and have not problems with doing that if needed. I am at work today and will be planning to use my laptop (with internal card reader) to see if I can get it to form properly. I want to confirm if the reader on my desktop is the issue so I know for future use. However, I'll keep the NC option available if needed as well.

Thought I would share one more thing just in case others have seen this as well. I used the 'Full (overwrite)' format option on the SanDisk 16GB CL2 card last night. I did not then do any other formatting, and just started to image the card and get it ready to go. I put it into the NC per OP instructions and it booted up, I saw the loading screen but then it went dark... the screen was still on as I could see some flashlight effects in corners/edges and just decided to let it go keeping an eye on it. About when it normally finishes up (compared to when I see the Linux messages) I saw the screen go dark. I then held power button to completely shut down. Let it sit for a bit and then booted up again. Came up just fine and went through the rest of the setup (again per OP).

I again played around with it, setting up gmail account, downloading some apps, setting up fancy widgets, etc and have not had 1 reboot/FC. I did have a couple apps that FC'd but that is not a huge issue. So the install went sort of weird (not seeing the linux messages initially) but it runs more stable now. However, this is were it gets sort of weird. Every other time I have done this (about 5 times now) the CM7 install looked the same, but the market was the older version (not the newer version with new layout). This time the market was the new version and I am using the same zip files I have used all 5 times to date..??? weird eh?

The other thing I noticed is that the original Angry Birds (free) app in the market doesn't show the "install" button so can't get that installed. I was able to install a bunch of other apps and other Angry Birds apps, but for some reason that one is not just showing up as 'downloadable/installable'.

Anyway, some strange stuff, but interesting to go through it all and see how things turn out... it really goes to show how specific the install and instructions need to be followed and any little issue (like my formatting issue) can cause some weirdness.

I'll be working to get a clean sd card format and go through it again and will report back. Thanks for all the help as usual.

Well, same problem with my laptop... could not do Full (erase) format. Maybe the 2 cards I have tried are bad, not sure, but this is strange. I'll try the new card coming in mail tomorrow. I'll use NC format if needed.

New quick question... there is a newer version of the sdimage (now v1.3). The OP lists the 1.2.1 version. Do we need to use that 1.2.1 version or can/should we use the latest version (v1.3)? The link to XDA in OP has the link to the current v1.3 file. I have been using 1.2.1... but may try 1.3.

Surf, you have been having some interesting issues for sure. Here is my best guess as eveidence keeps coming in... It sounds like the card reader on your PC might be bad or some how the formats you have attempted have been corrupted (possibly the software). Once you have a format corrupted card it is acting like a bad card no matter what device you put it in (Nook or laptop). This is then leading to the problems you are seeing. Hopefully all it takes is one good format of the card to correct the issues. Most likely you can get a good format by using the Nook to to the formatting or possibly trying different software than you have been using if that fails.

I would suggest you do not put your new card into your PC for formatting until you can figure out what is going wrong.

As far as the SD image, I would go with 1.2.1 since it works for sure with the instructions. I believe the issues you have had thus far are card related and I feel like the responses here have been that 1.3 can sometimes (but not always) be a little less cooperative. It won't hut to try it though and see which you have better success with.

The good thing about this process is all you have to do is reformat the card, burn an image and copy a couple of files to start the whole thing over. Normally this isn't very complicated to repeat as necessary and shouldn't be for you once you get the formatting figured out. Since you have multiple cards you might try and create one with each version and see if you notice any differences.

Hey guys,

I think I may have bricked my Nook Color....I have a rooted Nook Color. I downloaded the CM7 7.0.3 stable version and used my Clockwork Mod to load it. When it rebooted after going through all the backup it just hung with the Android green flash screen for about 20 minutes. I powered it off and back on and that is as far as it gets. I even powered it on and removed my SD Card....still no luck. Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi-

I just bought a nook color and want to root it, but I'm getting confused from all of the information out there and can't filter out what I need. (so I apologize in advanced if I'm asking things that have been asked and answered a million times, but I've tried reading through the posts and can't find what I need)

1. I'm not sure what mini sd card I should buy. My friend says I should get the most memory possible (32gb), but all of the forums say at least 1gb, so is paying for the more memory worth it? I don't really understand the apps things, as I don't have a smart phone, and I'm mainly looking to read from all types of e-books, but I don't want to have to worry about running out of space. The card I'm looking at is a SanDisc Class 4 32gb, but wouldn't mind paying less if memory isn't worth it.

2. If I do the instructions at the beginning of this thread, which seems the clearest to me, will I be able to boot the original nook settings with the card still in it if I still want to? I saw a thread that mentioned being able to do it, but not sure how if it's possible.

Again, sorry for any repetitive questions, but I just got a little overwhelmed in my research. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

If you Want to Root the Nook Color, you would be writing to the Nook's internal memory, Voids the warranty but runs a tad quicker.

If you follow the instructions at the beginning of this thread, You would be keeping the Nook Color in it's original state, and when you boot with the SD Card you would be running Android. A 4 gig and up sd card would be required. I hve not used a 32 gig card only 16 gig myself and without trying to boost the speed any faster then what the image is set at it runs pretty quick.

If you want to leave the card in the Nook, there is a way to do it because I did but I cannot find instructions right now. But there is dual boot instructions here somewhere. All you do is boot the nook and do not touch anything, it boots to Android, if you press a button then you can boot from the Nook Color without removing the SD Card.

Love my Nook Color better then my other tablets.

Have fun!

Hi Philmob, you nook might not be booting but it is definitley not bricked. This thread is for bootable CM7. Were you trying to make a bootable SD or install CM7 internally? If you were trying a bootable CM7 SD card then you should not have loaded it using ClockworkMod. It sounds like you made a backup so why don't you boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and restore your backup?

Hey guys,

Quick follow-up question. After following OP instructions, should the Market be the new version or old version? As mentioned above, I have only seen the new version once and it had a couple issues. I am trying to figure which I should be seeing, and why the he** should I see two different versions when I am using the same gapps zip file (latest one available) and the encore_7.0.3 zip file (as mentioned in OP).

Also, as FYI, I got the SanDisk 16gb Cl4 card, and ran CDM on it and was not happy. It was much slower than my SanDisk 16gb Cl2 card as well as slower than other cards I have. I returned it and will be looking to get another card from another location. It is amazing how different the cards can be.... really wish they would make manufacturers have to live up to some standards (i.e. Class 4 has to meet X, Y, Z to be considered Class 4... it is supposed to be like this but it sure doesn't seem like it in reality).

Oh one other question: if I replace the standard uImage (kernel) file on the boot partition of the SD card with a dalingrin version, where should I be able to tweak the CPU to an OC level? When I have tried this I go into settings>Cyanogenmod settings>cpu performance and have only ever seen 925 as the highest value (and that is even if I don't replace the uImage file with an OC version)....

thanks guys. Surf--that is exactly why I was getting confused and frustrated, all the reviews from the "techies" were like this card is not class X because blah blah while others will say it's great. I ended up with a PNY class 10 16gb, so we'll see how that goes...

Now that I got CM7 booting off my SD card, I'm enjoying playing with the new OS. However I ran into an issue trying to use Nook Tweeks. It's telling me "Kernel is not compatible" with the USB settings or the CPU clock settings. Now I'm running CM-7.0.3-encore. I thought this was the latest version of CM7. Should I be loading something different?

I just finished my root on this nook. Everything looks and feels good, but it's a gift for my lady, and she's going to want facebook to work with her contacts, and things are force-closing a lot.

Android 2.3.3
CM7.0.3
Kernel 2.6.29-omap1

Any ideas?

Okay, so I had to re-root. Everything works better after rooting with a class 2 SD card instead of class 10. Not sure what that's all about, but nothing is force-closing now.

I do have a quick issue though. I used the tutorial on the first page of this thread and it worked like a charm, but does it mean that the SD card must always be present to load CM7? I only have 105MB of space left (that I can format) on an 8GB card. What do I do to use more of the space without completely wiping the mSD?

Okay, so my impatience has boned me... and the OS.

So I've wiped again, and installed CM7 and gapps onto the mSD. I've rooted the device once again. I'm going to partition the FREE space (only 5.3gb or something like that) using the android system itself.

My question is, I want to install CM7 ONTO the internal memory, and every single time I've tried to do that, gapps will not, no matter what, install. No way. Not no how. CM7 boots up beautifully, but nothing will get gapps onto it.

I've tried the recoveryfix zip, I've tried installing the zip from the SD in CWR, I've tried everything. Nada.

Sooooo.... if she (this is a gift for tomorrow) wants more space, we'll buy a 32gb SD card, flash the same thing, and use the rest of the space as storage?
