(How To) Installing/Using ClockworkMod, Rom manager, nandroid backup, custom kernels

Except that nemith insists to only use 'Nook Color' and to stop using 'Nook Color (old)' since it's no longer supported. Despite many folks only being able to do successful backups with the old device. So until it works out or a better explanation is given, i believe that anyone not using a cm7 based rom should use old and anyone using a cm7 based rom can use the new one. I wish I could get nemith to acknowledge what we are seeing with this one.

OK... I went ahead and picked Nook Color Old, since I'm planning to try the phiremod beta2 one more time. If I want to try the CM7 in the future, should I remove CWR first (not the ROM manager app) and flash again with Nook Color?

I guess I'll keep my bootalble CWR SD card for "emergencies" and put the zip files onto a new card to use with the "internal" CWR. I hope I wont get stuck again in a boot loop this time.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have a vanilla NC 1.1 using Autonooter 3.0, and I flashed the kernel-stock 1.0.1 (have CWR 3.0.1.0 to get passed CWR bootloop)- is this the correct kernel to have flashed? When I go into SetCPU, it seems that the max is 800mhz and I can't figure out how to increase it to 1.1ghz? Thanks in advance!

Well, the "stock" kernel will only go to 800mhz, you need to flash one of the overclock kernels to get past 800mhz. You're in the right thread, you just downloaded the wrong kernel. The one you are flashing is the one to use when you want to go back to stock from an overclock. :)

If you have ROM Manager 3.0.1.2 and a correctly installed CWR 3.0.1.0, then you can flash back and forth between them without having to change anything clockwork.

I just stated ROM manager and picked up "boot to CWR" to make a backup and the version is shown as 3.0.0.5 (instead of 3.0.1.0). Is this what you meant by "manually" installing (i.e., I have to do an additional step to get the 3.0.1.0)?

Thanks

No, you are seeing 3.0.0.5 when you boot into CWR because 3.0.1.0 was not fully installed. You have to use ADB to manually push the recovery kernel. (that's the manual part) For some reason, ROM Manager doesn't apply the kernel properly so it has to be done via ADB.

Thanks for your reply. Time to learn how to use ABD I guess. The bootable CWR works great by the way.

Thanks! :) Just out of morbid curiosity, what happens if you flash without clearing caches? I ran into the issue where my NC 1.1 Autonooter3.0 freezes when it clears the Davlik cache. I went ahead and cleared the normal cache and that one (then NC froze); then rebooted and loaded an overclock kernel.. seems to be working great, but I guess I have this sinking fear that it suddenly going to blow up or something lol.

CWR Freezing after wiping Dalvik is a known bug, just hold power until NC powers off, then press and hold the 'n' button and press and hold the power button until you see the "Touch" screen show up, wait four seconds and let go of power - keep holding the 'n' button until you are back in CWR.

You are fine. the dalvik cache was cleared...like faceman said, as long as you just rebooted into CWR you could continue on with the instructions.

I finally get the NC back to stock and rooted (thanks for all your help) after waiting 10 days for the mail order sd card. Now I have a new problem. The Market used to work when I first rooted the NC before I broke it. Now I am back to where I was (it seems), but the Market is no longer working. Whenever I tried to do an install of an application, I got this message "download unsuccessful."

I did a google on this problem, some suggest to clear the cache. How do I do that? Or this problem is caused by order factors? Anybody had the same problem? And what is the solution?

So the market app works, meaning you can open it and search for apps, but when you try to install an app you get "download unsuccessful"?

Yes this is little of a common problem.

Open Nook Color Tools > All Settings > Manage Applications (alt menu -filter all) > Market app: clear cache

Hello All! This is my first post. I'm not new to rooting/flashing roms, however, I am new to the Nook and I'm stumped! Hopeing someone can help me out! I am rooted, followed the directions in the OP to flash CWM. I even got it to do a Nandroid backup. Once that completed, I tried to "reboot system" and it just keeps coming back to the CWM screen (v3.0.0.5). Does anyone have any ideas?? PS: I am running the rooted stock, as I haven't flashed any custom roms yet.

Thanks!

Hi rico2001, Thanks for the reply.

The list of apps I have is Andriod Live Wallpapers, Music Visualization Wallpapers and SoftKeys, even I ran Market, gmail, youtube, etc. They didn't show up on the Manager Application list. I remembered I saw many other apps on that list before when I first rooted the NC. How can get those apps on the list?

Welcome.
Common problem when you perform a backup with CWM recovery and you rooted using autonooter 3.0. It messes up the boot.image file and never lets you boot out of CWM recovery.
OP was changed to new CWM rom manger and CWM recovery.

What you need to do:
If you DO NOT have the latest CWM rom manger 3.0.1.2:
-Turn off NC
-Remove SD card
-Load SD card to any card reader
-Download and copy to SD card, removecwr.zip file from HERE
-Download and copy to SD card, new CWM recovery 3.0.1.0: http://muffinworld.net/android/nookc...mr_3.0.1.0.zip
-Re-insert the SD card to the NC
-Boot to CWM recovery
-Install from sd zip: removecwr.zip (this will remove CWM recovert 3.0.0.5 and restore stock recovery)
-Reboot as normal
-Go to market and install latest version of CWM Rom Manager 3.0.1.2 or .3
-Reboot
-Reboot to CWM recovery
-Install from sd zip: CWM recovery 3.0.1 zip
-Reboot
-Enjoy.

Alternate menu.

I use button savior so I press on alt menu button to bring up sub menu in "Manager applications. You will see "sort by size" and "filter" Press filter all.

Forgive my crappy art skills. :)

Thanks for the quick reply and great information!! I appreciate it so much! I just downloaded CWM Rom Manager from the Market today, I would assume that is the latest version (in which case, I follow the second set of steps in your post)? Since I can't get this to boot, I can't check the version number for sure . . .
