[ROM][Feb. 15 2011] >> phiremod nook BETA 2 << Themed Froyo 2.2.1

Well... it appears that our little problem (i.e., boot loop with CWR-SD) is related to 1.1 rather than phiremod beta 2. Linky [pages 17 and up have the same issue that we experienced].

The next time I'm putting a custom ROM, I'll revert back to 1.0.1 via the good old "8-failed-boots" method and go from there with the bootable CWR card. Let's see if that makes a difference.

Has anyone been able to get this ROM working coming from 1.1 instead of having to revert back to 1.0.1. No big deal, just trying to save a step

Just added dalingrin's 1100 mHz kernel. Wow - that really makes browsing a lot faster. I'm really impressed by what this ROM and kernel combination can do on the Nook.

Hi Mark,

Are you using the one downloaded from here? Linky

Thanks!

I used the emmc one from there. He is testing some slight modifications over at xda in his kernel thread. Have to do with fixing wifi problem. I had no trouble with the one in your Linky. These day links and future ones are better then the old ones listed elsewhere. They control the governor and make SetCPU profiles unnecessary according to him. Just need to use SetCPU to crank it up to 1100 mhz. See post 222 for links to his thread over at xda. Plus here will be links if he updates current ones.

Hey All,

Got some noobish questions for yall :)

1. I've installed 1.1 ghz omap oc onto vanilla rooted nc 1.1.0 w/autonooter 3.0 (courtesy of rico 2001); will have to reinstall this kernel if I install phiremod nook beta 2 ROM if I want my nc to stay oc?

2. Will I have to reinstall all my previously installed apps from the market?

3. Do I have to load phiremod every time i boot from an SD card, or is it just internally stored?

Thanks in advance :)

Flashing to this beta2 rom will wipe all of internal memory, including all apps and settings and then it will install it's own stock 800mhz kernel. You can then install one of the froyo 2.2 kernels to overclock to 1.1 Ghz. You will have to re-install all apps. This rom is internally stored. What many of us do is make a full backup in CWM recovery of what you are running now. Then if there is a issue or you just don't like beta 2 rom, you can quickly restore back to where and what you are running now.

Remember to wipe data in CWM recovery before flashing this rom.

*EDIT* Rico is of course correct. Beta2 installs onto the internal memmory. There are SD card roms for Froyo, but Beta2 is not one of them.

I'm not an expert, but I did give Phiremod Beta2 a try last week. That said:

1) Yes, I'm pretty sure you will need to do this. I also think you should do this to take advantage of the extra speed. I think that Kernel is also set up to run at 75% voltage compared to stock, so if you pair it with SetCPU (which is a must buy if you have not already bought it) you can extend your battery life.

2) Yes. Read up on Ti Backup (this is also a must have for various reasons). You can use this to back up your apps and then reinstall them after you switch roms. I have not figured out how to do this yet, but I don't have that many apps. I just redownload and install them. Don't worry if you've purchased apps. They will show up in the Market as purchased and availble for download at no additional cost if you sign in with the same gmail ID.

3) See Rico's post above. To clarify, you use the SD card to load the rom into the internal memmory. It does not run from the SD card after install. There are Froyo roms that run off the SD, but I'd recommend using the internal memmory instead as it should run faster. As everyone always says, make a backup of your current setup before you start messing around and you should be good to go. If you don't know how to make a backup, go into Rom Manager and select "boot to recovery." When recovery loads up, select backup and restore and then backup. It will take 10 minutes or so to complete. When it's done, mount the SD card in Windows (or whatever you use) and copy the backup onto your desktop for safe keeping.

I think the above is all correct.

That said, I decided to give Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 a try and I like it more than Beta2. Just seems to run a little faster and my WiFi works better. YMMV. The same rules apply for going to Nookie Froyo if you decided to go that route instead.

3) Nope. It just loads up as if it was installed on your internal memmory. If you take the SD card you will boot back up in your rooted 1.1.

Good point, I use ASTRO to backup all my apps to SD card then any rom I move to, I restore all my apps. Anyone can do the same with Titanium Backup.

I finally figured out how to get this working.

However, one of the main things I want to do, I can't...play videos. Am I doing something wrong? (They are mp4 and not too big, I figure if my droid can play it, so should the nook)

The black on black text would be hard to change, because it would require one to edit framework.

I am not sure about the videos. I just watch things straight from the web. You may need to download a trusted app from the market for that.

Rockplayer will play vids, but my god that app fails. Some vids the audio can be a full minute ahead/behind.

As much as I like phiremod, I may just have to go back to autonooter.

FWIW, I tried Phiremod and liked it ok until I tried Custom Nookie Froyo 0.6.8. For me, WiFi is better and everything just seems faster. Pretty happy with it so far. I don't think I'll ever go back to the rooted B&N...
