Trying to Identify Kernel, Possible Overclocking Possibilities for DM7022 Radio

Hi Dyn620,
Sorry this is going to be a dumb question but regarding the pad volume. I just wanted to check that you've got the pad audio up to max and that your choosing the pad icon on the head unit main menu??
e.g. radio, dvd, usb, ipad etc etc and PAD.

I know I got caught out tonight whilst driving home by pressing PAD on the main unit and then play within the music android app but the audio was nonexistent. Finally found that the pad volume was very low but unit I use the pad icon it didn’t route the sound via the head unit.

Again simple but just discounting the basics.
Gareth

Yes and yes. PAD volume is set to max, working mode is PAD. My ES777 gives a normal sound in radio mode, but DVD and PAD sound volume is very low. And bluetooth handsfree is like a 50% of DVD i.e. very very quiet.

Hi Guys,

I've been reading this thread with great interest, because my wife bought me a DM7022 for christmas because I had mentioned that I liked the look & the idea of the removeable pad etc.
Ive been getting ready to install it in my van, my son gave me some money so I could buy some kit for the installation, so far I have bought a cage & facia kit & I have started to tackle my first problem , in Wales we only have digital tv (freeview) & as you probably know the DM7022 only has a analogue tuner, I had a scart freeview tuner in stock & have decided to try to use it as a tuner for the DM7022, using a back to back female adaptor & a scart to rca phono adaptor

I bought DC power lead to provide power to the tuner & a combined tv/fm amplified aerial, I'm nearly ready to do the install & have spent hours hand fileing the surround to ensure a tidy fit. I have been getting the pad ready & have had a few problems, I have no android experiance so I'm learning as I go ! One problem I've had is that you tube dosent work & I cant find away to install flash, another problem is despite killing every running app, I cant get my favorite app Slingplayer to run properly, it drops more frames than it shows & is very slow to respond. Has anyone got any thoughts on these problems ? I hope to be able to contribute in return, as I said before, I dont know much about android but I do know about tv signals etc.

Hi Mark, afaik DVB-T tuner is an option for 7022/7033 and it normally costs extra $40 more or less. Afaik 7022/7033 comes from the factory with either analog or DVB-T tuner according to your order. But i don`t know what standard of digital TV it supports as i also have an analog one. May be their distributor in your country can give more information or even replace tuner pcb or complete main unit with DVB-T model? I suppose operation of the unit will be more convenient if TV tuner is built in.

I had a chat with the manufacturer when ordering my ES777A and they told me a DVB-T compatible model was only coming out in a month or so (or even longer). So it's not yet an option for the current unit.

Really? May be you can ask them about the firmware for PAD and main unit? By the way, some people say DM7033 is available with DVB-T since November 2011 at Winmark.

Update: ES has not answered my email concerning the firmware. But they are not a manufacturer afaik. Please ask your contact because it is too risky to work with /system without factory firmware for repair in case of some mistake.

Hi Guys,

I will try to fit the equipment I pictured above hidden inside the dashboard & connected via the video in rca sockets, I will place the remote eye on the dashboard so all of the dvb-t stuff will be out of view, but accessed through the DM7022, the only drawback I can foresee is that I will have to use a second remote to operate the dvb-t.
Does anyone have any ideas on getting the pad to work running the Slingplayer app, this is important to be because it allows me to access my home system (motorised dish / freesat+ / bt vision+) while on the move, using my phone to provide a internet feed.
If I cant get my pad to work with the Slingplayer I may have to upgrade the pad, did anyone succeeed in getting a android 2.3 higher spec pad on its own for a reasonable price or getting android 2.3 to run on the lower spec pad ?
Does anyone who has the newer higher spec pad have any opinions on how good it is ?
Sorry that I've got so many questions, Its been about 30 years since I fitted such a hi spec piece of car entertainment & I want to be as prepared as possible !

Many thanks for your replies, please keep them coming !

Hi Mark, can you give more detailed explanation of the problems with running SlingPlayer on your PAD? What did you do and what exactly goes wrong? I am not familiar with such software, but i will try to help.

You`ve asked about opinions of new 2.3 PAD. I can`t compare it with 2.1 as i only have 2.3. Basically, it works. There are some bugs of couse. It is fast and responsive, it plays videos and 3D games very smooth. Battery life is not bad. My wife has old Archos 7HT v2 7-inch tablet and she says 7HT is very very slow comparing to DM7033. Screen controls of 2.3 PAD are not very precise. No multi-touch. It is not an ipad in terms of screen controls, but still very good as a front panel of car stereo.

Hi dyn620,

Thanks for your reply, my wife has a archos g9 80 & its much faster than my DM7022 it takes on any task with ease including the Slingplayer app with no problems, where as my DM7022 cant cope with youtube video showing no video just playing the sound.

The slingplayer is a app that via the internet & a server connects with my home cinema, my slingbox at home streams my home tv to what ever place I am & displays it using the slingplayer app, this works fine on my wifes android sony phone, my wifes android archos, my htc hd2 windows phone & via every computer I've tried it on but on my DM7022 it drops more frames than it shows & often locks up or is very slow to respond. I've tested the pad connected to the same wifi network as the broadcasting slingbox, by conecting it to the same network, I've decided that the problem cant be the internet speed so I'm thinking it must be the DM7022 processor speed.

I would like to iron out most problems if I can before I install the unit in my van, so any ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome.
From what you have said, your DM7033 behaves like my wifes archos in a fast & efficent way, something my DM7022 doesn't seem able to do !
Thanks for you time & thoughts.

Hi Mark, i don`t know if Slingplayer will work on 7033, but i can show you how my ES777 (aka 7033) works with some basic applications.
Pleease have a look : ES777 (DM7033) demo.3gp - YouTube
In my opinion, 7022 and 7033 should not be VERY different. Yes, newer model is faster but i don`t think it is like Quad-core PC after x286 ;) May be you need to install or tune up some software like adobe flash player, etc.

Hi dyn620,

Thanks for the link & your thoughts, looking at how yours works I would say yours is much faster & fluid in action, mine is slower & stutters.
When I tried to get flash it says it is not suitable for my device, I found a flash for 2.1 file & installed it but it didn't help.
Ive installed advanced task killer to shut down all other running apps but still I cant get my slingplayer to run properly !

I was impressed with how well your pad works, I hope that I can upgrade my pad to work as well as yours, I may try upgrade the software on mine if someone comes up with a file, but I've got a lot to learn about android before I get brave enough to try !
The other option I suppose is to replace the pad with one the same as yours, If I can get one at a reasonable price.

Mark

Sorry to say, but the 7022 will not, even after substantial tweaking, be as fast and fluid as the 7033/ES777. The previous has a 600Mhz processor and the newer is a 1Ghz. There is also a doubling in memory size between them, as well as the update from Android 2.1 to 2.3.3 which is a lot more refined and has many problems honed out. One way you could try to make the experience more enjoyable is to first root the device and then install Startup Manager. It allows you to disable a lot of the autostarting system services, such as Gmail, phone dialer etc, that take up that precious 256mb of memory.

Also, the newer pad will not directly fit into the older head unit. There was some discussion earlier about tweaking something to make the new pad fit - maybe it could eventually be done.

Hi wuoma,

Thanks for your reply, I think rooting the unit is beyond my current ability (but i'm learning all the time !) I'm a bit confused as opinions seem to be different, earlier in the thread, one person says it will fit but wont charge properly, another says it wont fit ! I would like to get to the bottom of it all, especially if I have to part with more money !
If all else fails I will try to find someone else who has the later unit in South Wales to physically check ! It looks like I will have to learn much more about android if im to get any further in my quest to sort this out, especially if a replacement pad wont fit !

Thanks

Mark

The rooting part is the easiest. Just download Super One Click (SuperOneClick | shortfuse.org) and it's literally just one click to root your device. No experience neccessary. If you are missing some drivers there is even an option to install them directly from the program. This is what I used after trying several times to manually connect to my pad with ADB - even after manually installing new drivers I could not get it working. Super One Click worked like a charm.

Wait I thought a lot of people just got the new pad and fit it into the old head unit just fine. Are you sure about this? I still can't decide if I want to upgrade, I barely use my car at school.

No, sorry if it sounded like I was sure about this. I was basing my comment about the new pad not fitting the old head unit solely on the previous conversations on this thread. My understanding was that it would not fit, at least completely. I believe there was at least some charging issues with it. What I was going for with my comment was that at least everyone should read up on the new pad / old head unit issue before ordering just the new pad since there was talk of it not working.

I have my 777 pretty well working now, even got rid of the rebooting issue. I'll make a review/introduction post with a video on my blog later (hopefully tomorrow - I'm gonna go celebrate our wedding anniversary with the wife on the weekend) and have some concrete advice and suggestions on usability there.
