(How To) Installing/Using ClockworkMod, Rom manager, nandroid backup, custom kernels

Need help again. After successfully recovering to ver 1.1.0 stock, I did a lot of reading on options. Decided approach suggested to reset with 8 failed boot attempts and make sure my router was not plugged in so I wouldn't get the automatic B&N update to version 1.1.0 made most sense. Then I could root using autonooter 2.12-15 on the 1.0.0 version and then flash the NookColor_v1.1.0-r2 ROM after rooting. My goal was to get it set up so I could use CWM without having to worry about the hiccups with autonooter 3.0.

So I got through the 8 failed boots, got the installing software screen, and Nook progressed through this normally. When it finished this and started reboot, passed through the "n" screen, then suddenly the Android screen with the starburst pattern appeared. Nook then just stays in loop of Android pattern. I can shut it down by holding power button. I went through the 8 failed boots again, got installing software screen, with normal progress, but again got the green Android screen in endless loop.

Tried plugging in USB to computer to see if I could see NookColor - no dice. Computer tells me device is busy and cannot load drivers.

Am I screwed?

Mark

Nope not screwed, the NC is hard to break.

The factory reset procedure is two steps
1. 8 boot interrupts to flash NC back to stock 1.0.0
2. power + "n" button to de-register the NC

Both are important and both must be done, once step immediately after the other.

Flash back to clean stock ROM - nookDevs

Rico - that's exactly the process I followed. Problem is I'm stuck in an endless boot loop with Android logo after 8 boot interrupts. I did this twice - first using ADB wireless and second using button method. Both gave me same outcome. So I can't get to second step to do deregistration/data wipe.

Steve suggests using Vic's procedure to create bootable SD card with CW recovery. Does that make sense to you?

Yes, that proceedure accomplishes the same thing via SD card instead of button presses.

You can get the Nook back. I believe you want to try making a bootable CWR sdcard per Vic's post and load a stock image.

Followed your instructions. Got it back to CWR mode and formated system and data folders. Then installed ver 1.0.0 zip file. Everything went as advertised. But when I tried to reboot system, I'm stuck in loop between "Touch the Future of Reading" message and the "n" screen. Tried repeating the process - got same result.

I thought maybe I should download the 1.0.1 version zip and try that to see if I have any more luck with it. Or try the 8 failed boots process and see if that works.

Any suggestions?

Thanks to all for their suggestions and support. I bought this NC to use as a tool to learn about rooting, installing custom ROMs, and general playing around. Sure am getting lots of practice!

Vic is more familiar with this process than I am but yes try the 1.0.1 image. Also make sure your nook is plugged into charger. Try wiping cache in addition to formatting system and data this time around.

Just to be extra sure, flash the "repartition boot to stock" first, then format /data /system /cache and wipe dalvik cache, and then do the "restore to 1.0.1" and be sure to unmount the SD and remove before rebooting after flashing those files... that should just about guarantee a clean stock setup.

Any reason why we have to chose Nook Color (old) ? Is it dependent on ROM we are running ? And what'd be for CM7 / Gingerbread / Phiremod builds ?

EDIT : Got it. I think OP needs to be updated, as 'Nook Color' flashes for EXT4

Thanks for all help& advice. My Book is back up & running, rooted, & all apps/data restored from TiBu. I downloaded the 1.0.1 zip file and loaded it onto my sd card & that did trick.

Like I said earlier, I bought the NC as a learning tool, and it has been that!

Thanks again for all your help & support.

I am glad it is working for you now.

Updated back on 2-28-2011, see post #286

Apparently that is WRONG according to nemith, the author of the thread at XDA. Despite many people seeming to state that was actually the case, I think it's been fixed but I haven't tested it yet and don't know if I will actually. But regardless, Mistar Muffin created a flashable CWR update finally so you don't have to do the manual update... Time to update that OP again Rico!

Post @XDA for Flashable CWR v3.0.1.0 (that updates CWR and the recovery kernel):

(btw: My "wrong" is not meant malicously, it is only a parody of the response I received from the OP @xda when I attempted to clarify an issue and was blasted for it, only to have a major Oops from him (not to me though and no apology) since there WAS some errors and issues not an hour later, screenshots available for anyone interested.)

Flashing a new kernel using ClockworkMod Recovery
-Download stock and custom kernels zip files:
kernel-1000mhz-omap3630
kernel-1100mhz-omap3630
kernel-1ghz.zip
kernel-950mhz.zip
kernel-stock.zip stock 1.0.1
-Copy all (4) zip files to the root directory of your sd card.
-Open your favorite file browser and make sure all (4) files are on root sd card.

All (3) custom kernels are undervolted by 25% to gain better battery life. Unfortunietly, some Nookcolors may become unstable and not able to run some of the higher speed kernels.

Couple of updates Rico - you are listing 5 kernels, including the stock one, but you are speaking about 4. I guess you added one later but didn't update the text?

Also, I believe the kernels you linked are Dalingrin's original OC kernels correct? If so, they can all be replaced with this new link (Dalingrin's OC Kernels for all ROMs) that shows all 6 of his current kernels, and the link will continue to work when he updates them as well. Just make sure you state the user should grab the correct kernel for their ROM. He has a kernel for Eclair, Froyo/CM7, and HC; as well as eMMC and SD versions of each.
